I've had this orchid for several years and it's thrown a spike for the first time. But I just realized that the tag is gone...can anyone help?
thanks, Joe in Colorado |
We will be able to get closer when there are flowers but it looks like a Semi terete vanda of some kind. Needs high light. Lots of humidity

Hi Joe,
you must know roughly what it could be, or did you never know the growing conditions it likes when you first got it? If I lost the tags to my vanda's I could still work out through process of elimination which one is which. To me this one should stand out as it has vanda type roots but I will rule out all rhynchostylis because their leaves are more bow shaped. It looks a lot like an Aerides like the odorata for example because of the upright leaves which I suspect have a bit of a boxed end, vanda's have pointier ends Aerides odorata | Cattleya orchid, Beautiful orchids, Orchids So does that ring any bells? |
Maybe a Renanthera? I have a monachica that grows like that.

Looks a bit like a Renanthera but there are several other Vandaceous genera that it could be. (Jumellea also has that look, and some more unusual things too) Once it blooms it'll be a lot easier to narrow down even if an exact ID isn't possible.

Thanks everyone...I have been thinking Vanda of some kind but I'm not convinced since I've killed several Vandas here in CO.
When it blooms (excitement!!) I'll post some new pix. Joe in Colorado |
