Mounted Dendrobium - confused
5 Attachment(s)
I'm new to orchids in general and ordered a mounted Dendrobium Lindleyi by mistake. I thought it would be in a pot. This is also my very first Dendrobium so I'm still learning about how to tell if it's healthy etc.
If anyone could take a look at the plant and let me know what they think of its condition and if I should do anything specific to it at this point? What about the dead (?) pseudobulbs? For the watering I watched a few videos etc but I feel a little bit lost. From what I understand I should run water on the roots in the morning, daily, without getting any on the leaves. Or I should put the whole thing in a bucket, plant facing up for about 15 minutes. Is that daily as well? I don't know how some of the plant wouldn't be completely under water this way.. The leaves are so close to the roots. I have the time to use methods that require more care. I'd just like to do what's best. I also read that they like more humidity and I could mist the plant but again, what about the leaves? It's about 22/25 degrees celcius in my house this summer and the humidity is around 60%. It's much, much lower in the winter time. Thank you in advance. |
With potted plants, the potting medium can hold water, allowing the plant to take it up over an extended time period. With mounted plants, the pretty much only get it at the time of watering.
By soaking the plant, the mount will also absorb water, also extending the “uptake time”, but the simple fact is that mounted plants require much more frequent watering than do potted ones. As your humidity drop, even more so. A mounted plant has lots of air movement around it, so getting the plant/leaves wet should be of little consequence. I’d leave the old pseudobulbs alone if they are still firm, as they can act a storage vessels for the colony. |
Get the whole plant very wet every morning. You could do this in the shower, in the sink or in a bucket. Mounts are a lot of work because most should be watered every day.
