My first Orchid-Paph
4 Attachment(s)
I just read the thread about Paph's in spag.Since I am new to orchids,I thought I would post some pics of this orchid and show how it came to be from Lowe's.I keep reading about air ciculation for orchid roots,so I'm concerned about that and the planting medium. The Paph is planted in all spagnum moss inside an opaque plastic pot,and was then set in a regular clay pot.The spag is very wet.
For now,the plant will be kept on my outside deck-no direct light, but not in the dark, either.I'm in central FL and this will be summer weather -average 90° daytime and maybe as low as 74° at night.Humidity runs around 75-80%,or higher. The plant was grown in Acadia,FL,about 150 miles south of me,but I'm sure it was grown in a greenhouse. Should I keep the roots wet all the time? Will they get the air ciculation neccessary the way it is now planted? I hope I can get my pics posted.I resized them to around 100K.Included is a pic of the Paph name which looks really complicated to me.Orchid books and a light meter are on my shopping list. Thanks so much. |
I have this same plant and it is a beautiful flower to be sure. I have mine in a "paph mix" of fine bark, chunks of charcoal, large perlite, and some sphagnum.

That's a lovely bloom, Rothie!

i think spagh will keep the roots too wet
it will do better in a different medium nice plant though |
Very nice plant!
Lowe's orchids or Lowe's the big box Home Depot clone? Cheers. Jim |
If I am reading the tag correctly .. it seems like it's a
(Paph Supersuk 'Eureka' AM/AOS X Paph Raisin Pie 'Hsingying') X sib Which means that it's a cross between the hybrid (Supersuk X Raisin Pie) by it's sibling ( - an orchid that is related to another orchid by virtue of having been produced from the same seedpod) Since (Paph Supersuk 'Eureka' AM/AOS X Paph Raisin Pie 'Hsingying') does not have a registered name, it is named by it's parents. |
Lowe's Big Box.
Dorothy-Thank you for the naming explanation.I find it very confusing. Does anyone have an idea on the proper growing medium, container and watering of this plant? |
I left mine in the clear pot, but repoted into a paph bark mix from Kelly's Corner. I just check the bark for wetness by looking at the side of the pot. When it starts to dry out I water.

Thanks,Ross.I see lots of talk about clear plastic containers. Will this be enough air circulation with just drain holes in the bottom,or should there be some holes in the sides of the container?
|
Rothie - here are some links on orchid naming that may help to iron out the confusion :)
