Reviving Dying Orchids (Part 2)

Just an update to my earlier post on reviving dying Orchids.
My 2 phals have no roots now. I potted both in sphagnum moss and fir bark. I saw no improvement in any of the 2 but phal 1 lost a leaf. A week ago, I put it in water culture.

Phal 1 has no roots but is growing a new leaf (:scratchhead:) and has a yellowing spot on one of the older leaves :(

Phal 2 is still the same with no improvement :(

Please advise. I don't want to kill them. I was warned that it would take a long time (learning patience along the way).

I see roots in the vase and the jar. Those are enough to absorb water. The plants should grow new roots soon.

The yellow spot may be caused by the plant having more leaves than the roots can provide with water. Or it might be sunburn, or mechanical damage.

I don't have experience with water culture of Phals. I think the warmer it is, the better phals grow, both roots and leaves.

It hasn’t been quite a month. Phal roots are customized to deal with growing conditions so change can be difficult. I’ve found it takes about a month or two for anything to start happening so if the plant was gearing up to grow in moss and then was switched to water that can be a set back.

Personally, I haven’t had much luck with water culture for Phalaenopsis but others have. I tend to grow mine fairly cool (low 70s Fahrenheit) and have had the best luck with more open substrates. I use 5 parts small orchiata, 1 part medium perlite, 1 part charcoal. I pot in clear slotted plastic pots. For rootless and small Phals, I use the 3 inch size. I water whenever the bark is dry. If the plant is doing okay, be prepared to see nothing for at least a month, usually longer. I’ve found the less I mess with them in terms of jostling or moving the plant around the better they do. It’s just put them in a good spot, water when they’re dry, and wait, and wait, and wait ;)
