Can this be keiki? :O

Hello :waving

I have an Phalaenopsis orchid which I really love, she was a gift for a special occasion but it got terminal spike :( Since she had last blooming, she seems calm and like resting. Few days ago I noticed something which I thought is spike, and I somehow still think it is, but it kinda looks different then any other spike I saw. Since I want so much for her to have keiki so I can continue to have her, I started thinking that this might be it. Help me, what do you think it is?
Thanks in advance!

rbarata 10-02-2015 06:40 PM

It seems to be a new root.

wintergirl 10-02-2015 07:20 PM

It may be a root but it does have a lot of extra thick green tissue around it and that reminds me of a keiki. If it's a keiki, a little leaf will come out rather quickly and you will know.

Overall, the plant looks not horribly happy, so it *could* end up being a keiki, though I think it's a new root too.

Looks like a new root to me...

Looks like new roots to me

Thank you for answers. This Phal looks kinda bad because it only has two leaves because of terminal spike, but it has very good root system and it looks healthy in other ways... I hope it will be ok. Thank you guys once again! :)

Please let us know what develops. Thanks :)

I replied to this thread and yesterday noticed this in one of my phals:

I think root... spikes come from just above leaves.

This is just getting weirder... :O I hope I'm not spamming, if I do, just tell me and I won't post until this situation resolves...

EDIT: Just wanted to say that I have orchids for a few years and I saw many spikes and roots, but this just doesn't look like spike or root to me :O

estación seca 10-04-2015 07:07 PM

Now it looks like a new vegetative growth or spike.

wintergirl 10-04-2015 07:29 PM

It does have more of a keiki look to me :) OR... maybe spike?

AuroraPhal 10-04-2015 07:51 PM

Thank you all so much for showing interest in my Phal :) I really do hope for a keiki, but I'll be happy with spike too :) I have another question, since this will potentially be my first keiki ever, do I need to take some special care or do I just let it grow?

estación seca 10-04-2015 08:09 PM

Just let it grow until any root are 5-8cm long. That might take many months or even more than a year. If a new growth comes from the base of the plant, it is fine to leave it there so you have a double plant in one container. More flowers!

Is that brown stem on the left an old spike? Then what is underneath it is a root.

Yes, it's an old spike. Din't cut it lower 'cause I was affraid to damage the leaves. And I agree...this seems to be a root. This phal produces a lot of them in tnis area.

I have a little update :) This, whatever it is, seems to be hollow :O I think that's a point for keiki instead of spike, I never saw a hollow spike :O My guess is that this will evolve into leaves, what do you think? :o

I hope that you can see what I mean on pictures below :)

Hi,
I am not an expert but, particularly in the first photo, it seems definitely a leaf.
nice shot and good luck
Nicola

This is a curious case. I was gonna say I think from the tip it's a spike however it looks like maybe the plant is going the route of a keiki. I've had a plant or two seem confused, unsure what it wants to do and what looked like a keiki suddenly is a spike and vice versa. So I'm saying keiki but only time will tell for sure. Make sure to take care of the plant because if it goes downhill the keiki could suffer.

I guess it's pretty clear now :) So happy :)

nicola 10-18-2015 01:05 PM

Congratulations on the new keiki , now with a little care it will grow bigger and will develop its own roots .
I'm curious to see more photos soon
Nicola

Congrats! Little baby keikis are always exciting! :)

margitks 10-19-2015 04:53 PM

I am very happy for you that your plant is growing a keiki!
Make sure to give it plenty of growing time before even thinking about separating it ...

I don't think you should ever remove a basal keiki.

I agree. One of mine is growing three basal keikis and there won't be a way of separating them, which I actually like - one day, hopefully, they'll give us a wonderful flower show :)

[IMG][/IMG]I have had keikis on flower spikes that don't do anything, but eventually die. I have a bunch more, and decided to cut the stems to about 2" below and little above. This morning I looked at a couple and guess what I found??? Tiny roots, hallelujah. Will try to attach a pic.
