New orchid arrived today
2 Attachment(s)
It is snowing like mad and our high today is 1F, but FedEx brought my Pot. Fairyland. When I ordered it, it said nothing about bud or bloom and I was expecting just a nice plant. I was so surprised when I saw the three buds! :yikes: Now I'm worried about bud blast though. The orchid came from ideal conditions to my living room, what a shock that is! If it should bloom for me, I'll post pictures. Oh yes, it is supposed to be fragrant too. It is my first Catt. and I want to find out, if I can grow them in my conditions.

Ooo, nice looking plant. Just looked up this plant and I must say that the flowers look beautiful...hope they don't blast and you get to see some soon!
I'm willing to wait for flowers for weeks, even months, as long as the buds don't blast. :nailbite:
I can't wait to see the pictures of the blooms!
wow! looks great! I cant wait to see the blooms! just be sure not to put it in a cold draft, and hopefully you will get to see them bloom!
Congrats! I can't wait to see the color of its blooms. :)
Keep it just a tad on the dry side and you shouldn't have any trouble. It's the cold on their roots which cause the buds to blast. Water it with warm water and keep it warm. High light levels if you can.

I love the cattleya family. I am no good at phals ( yet manage to keep 8 alive) but my catts, oncs, and dends are amazing! Sadly, this years budget for orchids has been spent, but next year, I hope to go deeper into more unusual types.
Fingers crossed for your buds! Hope to see pics of your flowers. Good luck!
Thank you all for the nice comments and advice. :) I have already inspected the buds and they look the same as yesterday. So far, so good. :D
Great looking plant! What vendor is it from?
It is from Kalapana Tropicals, the plant was $18, the shipping is high, $16 2 day FedEx, from Hawaii.
Sorry, another one of those dumb newbie questions. What is "bloom blast"?
No such thing as a stupid question! :) When flower buds shrivel and fall off, it's called bud blast.
That is a really nice looking plant! I hope you'll post pics of the blooms!
I want to try catts too, but I haven't been convinced that I can grow them yet. A vendor at the show today almost had me convinced to try a catt. He said that if I could grow oncidiums, then I could probably grow mini catts too, but I just don't know. What made you decide to try them? |
You might want to try a humidity tray to minimize some of the stress on the plant, too. It's worth a shot!
Yes RandomGemini, I'll post picture, IF I get flowers! I was browsing the vendors site and really liked the flower and the fact that it is fragrant. I don't think I have the right conditions, especially in winter, but I talked myself into buying it. Actually, it didn't take that much talking. :D Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Will put it on a pebble tray. The buds have tiny drops of happy sap on them. :) |
There seem to be a lot of catts that are fragrant and I'm always wowed by them when folks here post pics of them.
I might have to try one. I need to find one that is not pink, purple, green, white or yellow though. I need something entirely different in my orchid collection. I wonder if any of the mini catts come in a christmas red? :D |
