Cattleya aclandiae on mount

1 Attachment(s)
Another rainy day with lots of time on my hands so I can finally share some pics. My C aclandiae was in bloom in May and currently has two buds plumping up. It is mounted on wood which its roots have lovingly embraced and grows outdoors hanging in my homespun shadehouse thrown together with clothing racks topped with wood lattice and shadecloth.

No-Pro-mwa 07-17-2013 09:49 AM

That is just cool looking. I should say the roots love that mount they have absolutely covered it beautiful specimen.

tucker85 07-17-2013 09:50 AM

That's a beauty! Very well grown. I love the fragrance on those also.

Picotee 07-17-2013 10:10 AM

Thanks for the kind comments, No-Pro-Mwa and Tucker 85. I can't get enough of the fragrance when this baby blooms.

tuvoc 07-17-2013 10:52 AM

Well done.

Nice. Is it true, that the aclandiae only get 3 roots Per new growts?

I really couldn't say. Have never noticed that.

WhiteRabbit 07-17-2013 08:17 PM

 Fabulous!

I got a small one -not yet bloom size - earlier this year ... I have no idea how far off from being bloom sized it may be ... What is the pbulb and leaf size of yours, please?

silken 07-17-2013 08:30 PM

Beautiful blooms and photo! Looks like a happy camper! I too have a small one and am waiting for it to bloom. It has lots of growths but was called a small seedling last summer.

Aki_James 07-17-2013 08:31 PM

Fantastic growing, stunning plant. I'm more than a little envious!! Very exotic!

dounoharm 07-17-2013 08:35 PM

what a beauty! love the spots! great mount! good growing!

Lorraine 07-18-2013 12:12 AM

Love the flowers of C aclandiae and you did a great job mounting it. It must be happy where it's growing.

Calbears 07-18-2013 02:25 AM

Wow, that is stunning! This species may have to be moved up on my cattleya wishlist.

RosieC 07-18-2013 06:01 AM

Wonderful!

Picotee 07-18-2013 08:00 AM

Thanks, everyone, for the kind comments. To White Rabbit: the psb's are four inches in length, the leaves are two inches long.

Nanuca 07-18-2013 08:24 AM

Beautiful plant! Could you tell us what is it mounted on? What type of wood? Whatever it is, your Cattleya aclandiae definitely loves it!

Sorry, I don't know. It was mounted when I acquired it.

One of my all time faves. I love the color of this group of catts. And the fragrance is wonderful. You've done very well. A lot of folks have trouble with growing these to flowering. Very nice one here.

Thank you, James. This is far and away my favorite orchid. I have a few more that are not yet mature enough to bloom but hopefully are only a year or two away.

Beautiful aclandiae!

I never noticed only 3 roots per growth. However, these guys produce a lot of root growth when mounted and happy. I remember having my mount completely covered with roots fairly quickly after I put it on a cork slab.

Island Girl 07-23-2013 04:43 AM

Wow! Those flowers are stunning! I just love the plant growth, and the roots! Wow! Love those roots  You have an absolutely beautifully grown Catt there! Gonna have to put this one on my wish list! Lol

Gthumbz89 08-04-2013 11:38 PM

I want one of these sooooo badly.... just need to upgrade the grow space and I'll scratch that itch in short order. Lovely spotted cattleya!!!!:congrats:

Orchidsoutdoors 08-05-2013 06:37 AM

That is a sensational specimen, particularly given that it's not the easiest of species to grow and flower.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. Yes, this species is sometimes described as 'persnickety' but this plant seems happy in my conditions, growing bright and warm.

Calbears 11-14-2013 07:39 PM

Just picked up a small aclandiae. I hope I can grow it as well as you have.

Tindomul 11-14-2013 08:29 PM

Very nice, wild looking.

james mickelso 11-14-2013 11:38 PM

Cal Bears, how are you going to grow it? Mounted or potted? Love to see when you are finished.

Ditto! Wishing you good luck with it!

silken 11-15-2013 11:07 AM

I should mount mine. It is constantly climbing out of the pot and I just bought a piece of tree fern fibre. Only thing is I can't always be around to mist it daily. I wonder if placing the mount in a pot with damp moss would make do when I can't be here?

james mickelso 11-15-2013 10:44 PM

It would help lessen moisture loss. But the moss would have to be very loosely placed around the mount and roots. Aclandeai don't like wet roots.

That's what I was thinking too. Just got a surprise today when I noticed that I have my first bud on mine!

Picotee 11-16-2013 05:48 AM

Silken -congrats on the bud! Looking forward to seeing a picture!

GardenTheater 11-16-2013 07:35 AM

Gorgeous blooms and happy plant!

Not sure yet. It's in a 2" pot at the moment. I'd like to mount it ideally, especially hearing this species may prefer it. I am concerned that I may not have the right environment or the will to mist it daily.

In that case, maybe placing the pot into a basket would work. That would allow the plant to run and attach to the basket without disturbing it.

You could also put it in a clay pot with large grade bark. As it outgrows this pot, just drop it in a larger clay pot with a few chunks of bark (or other material) to separate the pots. Not that much different than using a basket and you don't disturb the roots.

smweaver 11-20-2013 09:44 AM

That's a beauty. The roots, in particular, are very handsome (perhaps that's an odd comment regarding roots, but I think orchids roots, when well grown, are quite attractive--and, when they're this abundant, reflective of a good grower too). How do you like the scent of the blooms? Although the flowers are undeniably pretty, I've never been a fan of the fragrance (many others, however, have stated that they enjoy the scent, so maybe I'm in the minority). Congratulations on your beautiful plant and blooms.

Steve
