Bc. Kosh Wallis 'Paradise'
I've had this one for a few years now. I love the fragrance it gets at night! i divided this plant six months ago into two equally sized division, the other division also has a bud and a small spike growing! this one has three flowers on one spike and one bud on a second spike, as well as a third small spike growing! The flowers arent as good form wise as last blooming, but last blooming only had one flower, this time the plant is half that size and has more flowers!

Very nice! I haven't seen this one before. The night time fragrance would definitely be a plus. That looks like a pretty fancy lighting system you have for your pictures. The photographs are great.

haha its not too complicated, its just a sppedlight in an umbrella coming from the left angle and some white matte board at the right angle for a little fill light. and theres white matte board for the background and for the pot to sit on. |
I like the white background! nice color rendering. I guess you used a Nikon judging from the SB800 used. what lens/camera?
I am so tired of AOS' Orchids mag style photos with a black background. This looks good and more real life like. I have one of these, grows like crazy, never bloomed. I think some growths had sheaths but dried up. does it bloom from a green or from a dried sheath? |

me too! while i agree that using a standard black background for all photos for the aos awards database is good to keep things consistent, it gets boring and for things other then the awards database, people should branch out! i love a black background too, but white is ALOT easier to light!! interesting. it depends on the season i think. because this grows new leads (like 12 at a time!) throughout the year, but they either dotn bloom or they wait until the season to bloom. some come from no sheath, some come from green sheet, some even come from brown sheath, so it depends, haha! |
Very nice! I am looking forward to my brassavola blooms. Nice pictures. I often take my flowers at night for dramatic effect but it is usually the roses.

interesting! these days when im taking photos of orchids to post, i almost always use some type of artificial lighting. i just like the studio look, and knowing that i am in complete control and can decide exactly how it comes out  |
Well, the roses are outside. :)
Your pictures are very good! I am always impressed! |

Nice studio setup. I use white foamboard, also, usually under a skylight or on my balcony for natural lighting. I find white backgrounds really show off a plant well, though perhaps not as dramatic as black backgrounds do. I recently divided my BC Kosh Wallis also, and am considering redoing the one in a basket which doesn't look happy. Congrats on yours.

you should post a photo of your typical setup next time! |
Nice setup! I usually use black background to shoot flowers or natural green grass when it is summer, but the white looks much "cleaner".
I will try your setup for white back. BTW, I use Nikon too. |

go for it! if you dotn have an umbrella you can just bounce a speedlight off the ceiling or a wall. with a white background its really flexible to light, black i find to be more difficult. what setup do you shoot with? |
I use Nikon D7000 with 60MM/2.8D AF macro lens.
I usually put my plant on black Ikea coffee table and it creates black background without much fuss. I dream about studio with backdrops and lights and umbrellas, but that's in some future since I just made a rather large purchase of orchdarium for my phals. :) |

gotcha, very nice. have any samples we could see? haha so do i! but that will have to wait until later because i have car insurance and gas to pay for. then ill be in college in a year and a half, so portability is the key! i only have an sb600 and an ubrella/lightstand. used creatively with walls and boards to bounce the light around, i can get some very nicely lit shots that look like more than 1 speedlight was used! |
I have Nikon SB-600 and tripod, but rarely use all of this since don't have a proper place for the setup and am to lazy to run around with all the equipment.
So I just use F8, put the plant against dark furniture and use default flash. Most of the time I get heavy shadows that I don't like. Sometimes it looks not too bad. Here is the example of such "setup": http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LB8gPnMu2a...ciosa_c1_3.jpg Here is the mounting wood piece as a backdrop: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0W0emQw1JT...coerulea_2.jpg And this is (you wouldn't believe) the stainless backsplash - the plant is actually standing on a cooktop: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HfJBj0p3A2...a-coerulea.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dDUkModolz...-coerulea2.jpg |
they look great though!! good clarity and even lighting and i like the reflection off the table! i never have good success with the on body flash
|
Bob, my posterboard backdrops come from drugstores or dollar stores and cost about a buck a piece. LOL
