Cattleytonia Why Not
Here's a little cutie for ya'll. Cattleytonia Why Not. I have it mounted on a bunh of old roots from about 6 different orchids that havebeen mounted on this same bunch of roots for quite a few years now. I think there is a piece of old cork under there some where. The first 3 orchids mounted on this were Encyclia Citrina but they all went to orchid heaven when I moved up here to north San Diego county. Flowers every year. I have included some pictures of the mount itself. Well maybe it shouldn't be called a mount as it is nearly all roots. Old and new.

Nice! :wtg:

Beautiful! Mine is also blooming. I think this is one every grower/hobbyist/collector should have. It's small, it's very forgiving, and it's RED!

I have a couple hanging around and they are quite reliable. Last year I had 15 flowers on this. This is the first bloom this year with 4 more shoots to go. One of my first orchids I ever bought. The other one has lost it's tag somewhere along the line and hasn't bloomed sinceI took it off the tree a few years back. LC Orange Nugget. Hope it comes back.

Looks great!

Thanks

'Why not' is a great little orchid. I put off buying one because they're so common here in South Florida. I finally picked one up at an orchid society meeting and I'm glad I did. It's a strong growing plant and a very reliable bloomer. The psuedobulbs don't all bloom at the same time so I get flowers for several months from it. Yours is very pretty. Excellent colors.

Lovely, great color.

She says thank you. Thank you all. She has brightened up many a foggy, cloudy day for me for many a year. Yes Tucker. For many months her bright smiles wait for you to come and enjoy.

Gorgeous one!

Why Not, was one of my first orchids, its has remained my favoite you always can count on it to bloom. Enjoy!!!
|
That's lovely! I didn't get one when I could have and now that I want one, I haven't been able to find one!

I was just going over my notes for my Why Not, and remembered that it doesn't like to dry out at all when it's in bloom or the spike and blooms will droop. Has anyone else experienced this?
|
Mine dries out regularly. It is hanging from a wire on one of my shelves and sometimes goes a couple days between watering. Hasn't hurt it. Humidity stays around 40-50% most of the time. There is no mount to speak of. Just an old piece of cork somewhere inside the mass of old dead rots topped by live roots. I'll have to take a pic of the rootmass for everyone who's interested in how orchids don't need media to grow. This has been blooming for about a month now and doesn't look like it will drop a bloom any time soon.

Interesting. I'm thinking it must be an adaptive thing based on the culture the wholesaler was giving mine.
|
I have one called Why Not Round About that hasn't bloomed yet. I sure hope it is as pretty as yours.
|
Thanks. It probably will be prettier.
|
I went out to the greenhouse to check on it and remind myself. It has a couple of new growths but no sheaths showing yat. I bought it a year ago April so I am hoping to see something this year.
