Houston Orchid Show

had lots of fun at the OS this year again :bowing. you should volunteer to intake plants at least once in your life for an orchid show. I volunteered twice already.crash course in whats what and whats not what you thought it was but is what it was now before they changed it the last time someone had a thought. :hello

the Paph Deperle Alba went out with a 3rd place ribbon.

if it hadnt been so dark in there it would have gone home alone. bloom fell off the monday after...Oh well I got it there!!

A big Dendrobium spectabile. blooms look like the tiny little octopus you find at the buffets. taste about the same too I bet..

this flower was blinding and nice smelling too :)

I got 1 blue and 1 white for my masdys and the northern sun was pulled for AOS judging..no AOS but they looked at it ...

I bought a blooming size c. walkeriana 'Perfect Blush' and a large division of schomburgkia splendida var.cauca to go along with my encyclia odoratissima

this is the walkeriana...

he had one the same size with 2 blooms opened and this one had 2 new growths. I opted for new growths :blushing:

Very nice! Thanks for sharing! Congrats on your nomination and ribbons!

WhiteRabbit 04-27-2012 11:36 PM

Awesome! Congrats on the ribbons and having a plant AOS judged! :wtg:

RJSquirrel 04-28-2012 03:33 AM

Thanks!!

It was more exciting than it should have been for me..I was one vote away from sweeping the masdy class 1st 2nd and 3rd place. Someone had a monster veitchiana that got in my way and took my 2nd place ribbon. went and won best grown too. The Masdy was also one vote away from being best misc large flower...grammatophylum scriptum won best flower there. It had 43 chances to make a nice flower mine only had one chance. I dont know how you can compare them....Soooo close!!!!!. The flowers on the veitchiana were old and torn but it was so well grown it deserved the ribbons.

I worked the crew that voted for them other flowers too and I never said a word. Its about the flowers not who's it is ya know

A big haul bec we got the best display trophy. I was convinced into trying to join the ranks of being a judge. I have a good eye for symmetry shape and color. Not everyone has that ability. I didnt realize it could also be a disability

You really got to have a nice stock pile of plants to do shows. Out of over 200 plants I had 6 that made it to the show and 5 of them I just got recently :(...I cant keep stock piling orchids just to have a handful for a show every year. I have to look at what I got going here and make some adjustments. A few weeks after the show I got plenty..ohhhhhhh them orchids have a mind of their own I think sometimes!!!

You need a good healthy pile 'o plants anyway just to make ya feel good...:blushing:

Seems like you had a very nice show overall! Do you have pics of your ribbon winning masdies and the AOS judged one? I'd love to see them!

I like your stockpile logic, at least you are sure to always have blooming plants for shows! I would do the same, except that the dutch orchid society seems to organize very very few shows. I hope to bring a plant to the main show in October.

the Highland Monarchs tallest in the middle were selected for blue and looked at for judging. the dean haas in fron won 3rd place. but they didnt make the AOS cut bec they were bending back too far. lots of if but IF they had been a little fresher might not have been bent so far back..notice the striped legs on the small one to the left :). Most of the buds blasted when I got them home but I do have more poppin up. These larger masdys pop put spikes with every new growth. hard part is getting them actually bloomed out keeping them cool and humid enough.. lost a bunch of them

But Thanks You I had lots of fun with the orchid shows

Gorgeous!

bballr4567 04-29-2012 11:11 PM

Ahh that burana beauty is so pretty! Mine needs to bloom already!

Awesome small picture set.

WhiteRabbit 04-29-2012 11:13 PM

wow - they're fabulous! :wtg:

camille1585 04-30-2012 03:39 AM

Great looking masdie! It's a very nice yellow.

RJSquirrel 04-30-2012 05:02 AM

:bowing

I understand once a flower has been judged or been pulled for judging, that flower wont be considered again...I can hear the jeopardy theme in the background playing while I wait for more better flowers maybe to bloom out.

I have lots of great things planned for my flowers. I just need a little cooperation from them now

What does the RTH stand for with the Burana?
It is gorgeous!

bballr4567 04-30-2012 11:01 AM

Im pretty new but I know this because I have one.

Rhyncattleanthe

It was its old class before they made it a Potinara IIRC.

Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Vanda lover 04-30-2012 11:43 AM

That's an interesting hybrid. Does it bloom often?

bballr4567 04-30-2012 11:52 AM

A couple of members here have it bloom in the spring and fall. Currently, mine looks to be on that track too. I have two mature growths that havent bloomed, two immature growths (that'll be the fall Im thinking) and now three nubbins. Its a very vigorous plant and I got it for $10 through Hausermanns.

Vanda lover 04-30-2012 01:00 PM

What a bargain! I wish we had access to plants like that.

I agree. Even NOID Phals at Walmart and grocery stores cost more than that! and at Home Depot can be as high as $51.00 in a fancy pot :(

bballr4567 04-30-2012 01:38 PM

Yup, it's why I got it. I was surprised at how cheap it was for such an awarded plant. Wish I could ship it to you!

Rj, did you get any orchids at the show?

RJSquirrel 04-30-2012 09:19 PM

uh uh I only got 3 plants :)...a c. walkeriana 'Perfect Blush' is going to be very special, from Roy at H & R nurseries.
My pictures from the show are mostly bad. But heres a good one...
he had a few of these for sale as well, I have a real weakness for the c acliandie 'insert any name here'... ;)..It is really neat how they figured to grow them..Just awesome plants and I will pass along the secret to growing mounds and mounds of thick white roots on them....heh

All we ever have to choose from are phals and the odd cym.
It's ridiculous! Why no variety?

RJSquirrel 05-01-2012 05:33 AM

its your location..even in town here some lowes and home depot have more stock than others, some have bag babies some dont...just have to keep your shopping cart full online ;)..

stay away from them store NoiDs they only lead to more NoiDs

Vanda lover 05-01-2012 10:28 AM

Shopping on line doesn't always work well for Canadians either. We have few vendors and very expensive shipping. I don't mind noids if that all I can get.
The Home depot in Ontario sometimes has more variety.
