What is your favorite flower?

Orchid is my favorite flower, I really like it.

Susie11 08-22-2011 07:10 AM

Well mine is an orchid too. I think I would have to be more specific and say that the Slipper orchids are really my favourites. Probably the Phragmipedium types with long twisted petals.

camille1585 08-22-2011 05:02 PM

Well, orchids of course!
But other than those, I do have some favorite 'normal' flowers. My favorite fragrant flowers are lilac and lily of the valley. In the non fragrant ones I really like Hemerocallis.

fishmommy 08-22-2011 05:10 PM

lilac and tessellated blue vanda flowers. tied for first. second is phal amboinensis

mmursuli 08-22-2011 05:14 PM

Tulips. Unfortunately, they don't grow in my region =/

You can if you store the bulbs in the fridge for a long period (can't remember how long). Much more work, and I suppose the flowers don't last as long in such a warm climate, but it is possible.

Junebug 08-22-2011 06:13 PM

It would be impossible for me to pick a favorite. I'm fond of chids, that's for sure, but there are so many beautiful flowers. Variety is the "spice of life".

Yes, really! I looked it up, and this should tell you everything you need to know. How to grow tulips in warm climates?

Enablers are us, whether it's orchids or other plants. :rofl:

Wrebbitrocks 08-23-2011 06:18 AM

Angraecum sesquipedale, Rhyncholaelia Digbyana, phal. type dendros, blue vandas, Laelia anceps, Sophronitis coccinea, Phrag. besseae, and Renanthera coccinea; none of which I've had luck with BTW :/ oh well, I won't give up yet :D

camille1585 08-23-2011 06:21 AM

Don't know what Nicky intended, but seeing as this is in the off-topic section, I'm thinking that we're supposed to tell which are our non orchid favorite flowers?? :scratchhead:

Wrebbitrocks 08-23-2011 06:28 AM

oopsie :) i LOVE yellow hibiscus, red crepe myrtles, and Mandevilla

RosieC 08-23-2011 07:22 AM

Unfortunately Nicky is a spammer who has now been banned and the spam links removed. So not sure what her intention was as far as orchids or non-orchids, but the main intention it seems was to spam us :(

However I don't really want to delete this thread if it's drawn a good discussion so I'm going to leave it open.

RosieC 08-23-2011 07:25 AM

So... my favorite

I would have to say Hippeastrum, also known (incorrectly) as Amaralis.

I love the massive flowers it produces. Just mesmerising!

I like that one too. They come in so many colors. Although there are many lovely flowers. Such as hibiscus and I don't no the correct name the Xmas cactus.

fotofashion 08-23-2011 11:37 AM

What is your favorite flower

My favorite is whatever is blooming at the time. Starting in spring, daffodils, magnolias, azaleas, later there are daylilies, anything in the Amaryllis family, right now the crepe myrtles, later more Amaryllis family. Well, you get the idea.

vandagirl 08-23-2011 11:47 AM

sounds good. It is true there are so many nice flowers. Especially in spring.

Tindomul 08-25-2011 11:08 PM

What a kool question! And to think a spammer started this. Classic.

I think Orchids are cool, but there are others I think are just as awesome.
Asclepiads -- these include milkweeds, Hoyas, Dischidia, lifesaver cactus and starfish cactus (Stapelia, Huernia, etc.....). I love these because of the fantastic pollination mechanism and the shape of a crown on the reproductive parts of the flower (not the petals or sepals). I think this group is equal to orchids in strangeness.

Then we have Aroids. So many different cool arrangements of Spathe and Spadix.

I love the tubular flowers in the heather family, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, heaths and heathers, blueberries and tropical blueberries, all amazing.

flhiker 08-26-2011 12:27 AM

Because they are beautiful and very fragrant. Most any night blooming cacti.

Leafmite 08-26-2011 12:19 PM

It is tough to pick a favorite. Roses are wonderful but digging around the roots under the thorny branches to treat with systemic is no fun, nor is spraying for 'black spot'. I have a variety of spring bulbs and fruit trees which make spring really lovely (when we don't get a late frost) and then, I have some summer bloomers that are sprinkled among my herbs. Heliopolis blooms from late spring until frost and is a pretty plant. I really like my jasmines because of their fragrance and the hibiscus for it's showy blooms. I've really liked my orchids when they bloomed but I wish they bloomed more often or for longer and were more strongly fragrant (roses, lilac, lily of the valley, and jasmines spoil me). Maybe some of the orchids that haven't bloomed will be a favorite. I do have some really nice young catts, angraecums, vandas, and a psychopsis that show promise. So far, my no ID phal-type dendrobium has the prize for the orchids. It usually has new spikes forming when the old ones begin dying off, is really pretty with nicely-sized purple blossoms that smell like grape geletin powder and the blooms last two and a half months. Wow! What a tough question!

I've never had a favourite flower because our culture is not 'flowery', I just got an orchid recently though and it is great.

Pink Lady 08-26-2011 12:49 PM

Do flowers really have sweet scents?

This always reminds me of floating around in the seventies when it blooms.:waving
Fairchild gardens has a tunnel trellis of them about 50 feet long.
Strongylodon.

Tsuchibuta 03-26-2012 06:22 AM

I like the unusual and would say that the bat flower is probably my favorite flower.

Angurek 03-26-2012 02:15 PM

It's hard to pin down favorites, with so many wonderful plants out there.

As far as orchids go, my favorites are Bolleas and Huntleyas (even though Huntleyas are a pain in the butt to grow). I've recently fallen in love with Anguloas and Lycastes.

My favorite non-orchid flowers are Hymenocallis (the peruvian daffodils), Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum), and lilies. :)

NatalieS 03-27-2012 01:41 PM

Frangipani, and himalayan blue poppies. The first for its intoxicating scent, the other for its vivid, blue colouring.

Huntleyas are easy in intermediate climes.I tried them in Miami. FAIL.
Here, you need a machete to keep them at bay.
Here's a really neat flower.
Hint. Almonds, peanuts, peanut butter, ice cream
You tropical folks hush. This is for yankees to guess.

Yeah... Reminds me of a nobile den. the way it flowers off of the main trunk like that. I've tried dried cacao beans that a friend brought back from Nicaragua. It's so unlike the chocolate that we consume that you always wonder who decided to use it like that in the first place!

Lilacs have always been my favorite. I got lucky with the new house - we have a nice young Lilac bush planted and it is in bloom right now :)

Exo 03-29-2012 10:16 PM
