Miltonia spectabilis var. moreliana 'Goliath'
This is a plant that I purchased with reservations in August 2010 from Puanani Orchids in Waimanalo, Hawaii. I was not sure I could bloom this plant since I don't normally have good luck with Miltonias. It was a suprise to see the plant in bloom with its intense color and huge flowers. The flowers are nearly 4 inches wide while the lips are 2-3/4 inches wide. The plant is in a 5-inch plastic pot grown in bark.

Does it have a nice scent? I heard they have a fragrance.....Nice plant by the way!!
|
nice!
|
those colors are great!
|
You shouldn't have any problems growing Miltonias, but Miltoniopsis (pansy orchids) might be a problem (or not).
|
Mel - No reservations here, you have grown that plant to perfection. Congratulations on a job extremely well done.

As a matter of interest, I talked to Gavin, owner/operator of Puuanani Orchids, about this plant. He mentioned that he obtained the plant from a backyard grower who was getting rid of his orchid collection. The plant that I got came from a cutting that Gavin made from the plant. I picked the plant up on a society field trip to his nursery.

I've thought about this plant in the past too and had doubts. Now I haven't; I'm getting one! Beautiful flowers!
|
:yikes: Stunning plant, flowers and photo! Thanks for posting.
|
Stunning plant! Even the foliage smiles at you!
|
Stunning. I love this one!
How do you grow this. I have the standard variety and it grows like a weed, but I can't get it to flower. |
Beautiful flowers. Nice job of blooming it.
I think that is the Miltonia I was looking for when I picked up my Spectabilis bicolor (it was the only Miltonia they had). Darn it...now I need to add this chid back onto my "Wish List" |

Ok thanks. In Hawaii I guess you get a lot of sunshine even with the shade cloth? It's been suggested to me on another thread that I might need more light.
What colour are your p-bulbs. Someone has said that if they start to turn yellow it's better for flowering. |
Actually I can see in the pic there is some yellow tinting even if they are mostly green.
