Phal. I-Hsin Spot Eagle 'Montclair'
I love this bloom-- the petals and sepals are as round as can be and though the pic isn't very good, it has beautiful marbling of its deep purple/red coloring. It's not an overly large bloom but it is waxy and of heavy substance. It has a delicate and sweet scent as well.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_-...0/IMAG0319.jpg This is a new addition to my collection and comes to me from Norman's Orchids (orchids.com). They did a fantastic job of packaging the plants-- now, if only FedEx would have done an equally good of job delivering it (they sent it to Wyoming instead of Colorado-- I can understand their mistake, though, they are right next to one another). So the plants arrived cold and travel-wary. But this plant managed to keep its blooms. When the final bud opens, I'll take a proper photo of it to share. |
Love the color!
|
Ooh, really nice colour and I love that round shape.
|
another nice one from ryan!
|
Love love love the wine color and the nice round blooms. You find such awesome looking phals, I envy your collection!
You're lucky the buds didn't blast with the long cold trip, I got some phals in bloom/bud last month and despite the heatpack they all blasted within days. |
Wow Ryan! That one is awesome! What a great shape and color. Wonder where on the shelf I could squeeze that one in????

That is one exceptional color with a scent to boot, WOW!! When psyc said it also reblooms off of old spikes well that just put it over the top. I need to welcome one of these Phals into my home.
Thanks for sharing Pilot. |

Many phals that have genes from warm-growing plants will often rebloom on old spikes. Violacea and bellina being two that are known rebloomers. The best way to tell if a plant is likely to have a scent and rebloom is to look for those shorter, lighter green spikes and flowers of waxy texture. This isn't a guarantee but in general, if you can find a plant with violacea/bellina or other warm-growing, scented plant genes in them (search the orchid registries) you'll have a plant that will give you new spikes but also bloom on old ones. They become impressive after several years. |
Interesting. Great to have such knowledgeable people on this forum. I always appreciate the information and help with questions or problems. I went into Norman's Orchids site and they have so many beautiful Phals. I could easily drop a few hundred dollars there. I've only gone through the first 7 pages and found 3, this one being one of them, that I'd love to get. Power Ball is tonight so you never know, or so they say. Thanks again Ryan.

I just got this a couple of months ago! it is truly amazing!!!! it just keeps pushing out new buds! i got it from normans also! When i purchased it on line i only selected it mature size not blooming and it came in spike! with three buds!
I love the smell! it smells like rhubarb freshly cut! very interesting smell! i love it! I didnt know it bloomed from old spikes tho! i wont cut it when its done then! Another interesting thing is Where the current bloom stem is there is also an old spike(dead nub) in the same space!!!! Like Ascocentrum ampullaceum! i guess it also blooms from old sites as well. |
This plant just sounds better and better. Now I have to make the purchase, Power Ball or not!
|
oh wow - I love this one! good growing!
|
Awesome flower. Doesn't this one have an FCC? I can't remember.
|
It had an AM in 2009 with 80 points.
|
Ryan and psyc are both enablers and should get commissions for this plant. Both of yours are beautiful. Ryan, glad yours got there safely.
|
I think that rangiku is correct. You guy are enablers and Norman's should send you each a free plant. I was not the Power Ball winner in Florida last night but I have to make the purchase today anyway. LOL!

Norman's has a wonderful collection and a lot of scented phals, which I happen to favor. I don't think any of my orchids, since learning that they can have a scent, have been without a scent! It has become a prerequisite! |
HAHA!! Norman's could pay me commissions...with plants!
|
Exactly!
|
A proper photo...
As promised I wanted to get a better photo of Spot Eagle and it wasn't easy-- its a VERY shiny bloom!!!!
