Stranger trying to "prune" my orchid

The other day, there were some people here at my apt, spraying for bees. Well, the woman saw my orchids, and we got talking. Turn out she "has one of these" and "has one of those". She saw my Chia Lin, and said she had one of those as well (not so sure she knew what she was talking about though). Well I've had some issues with my Chia (it is suicidal), and have had to cut off some of my leaves, but left the pseudo bulbs. She apparently felt that these needed to be removed. She went at it, and attempted to break off one of them! I was trying to stop her, telling her that, no they should stay where they are. Again she was about to break off one, telling me "no, this one is really old, it needs to come off". I tried to tell her that, "no, that is one of my newest growths, I just had to cut the leaf off of it. She kept insisting "no it's old. See it is black, it needs to come off". What she was referring to was actually the dried "outer leaf" that had not come off of the bulb off yet (I had just left it on). OMG!!! I finally managed to get this woman to leave my baby alone, but she didn't seem very happy with me.

Seriously, would you just try "pruning" someone stranger's plants?! She admittedly did not know much about orchids. Really?! Even if she did, she should not have tried to snap pieces off, maybe make a suggestion, but to try to start snapping off all of my pseudo-bulbs? I was not happy :((

Thought I would share.....

Wow. Just, wow.

I would consider that vandalism at the very least, and assault at most. I don't take very kindly to people messing with my stuff, so in that case a line from The Crying Game would probably fix the problem: "You ever try to pick up your teeth with broken fingers?"

But then, that's just me. I'm sure you were much nicer. :)

yikes!

and lol @ jenmonkey ;)

 Jen I love it!

I think she'd have been so close to getting a knuckle sandwich from me! It'd have been like "Come on, make my day!"

Back when my daughter was a baby we had a Greek student and her mother staying with us. It was a cultural exchange thing. This woman drove me demented! She would go into the babies room and get her out of her cot when she was asleep! "She sleep too much, she get up now!" She would also pick up my knitting and start doing it! LOL!

Ardera I think you were very restrained, they just don't understand.........No one messes with baby!;)

:fire::superwoman .
Be careful. Some try to be too smart.
My advise is do not show them to strangers.

UKCat 09-14-2010 04:20 AM

My Feeling is that she was trying to help herself to a piece of your plant to add to her collection

Some people are too sneaky for thier own good :(

boyong 09-14-2010 04:39 AM

yeah, maybe she just wanted some of your collections:)

Hera 09-14-2010 06:57 AM

Wow, keep the hands off the merchandise!! I would have been furious.

UKCat 09-14-2010 07:03 AM

Sorry I have a very suspicious mind, I have seen people in garden centers and botanical parks breaking bits off of plants to add to collections.
So my first thought would have been someone helping themselves and not your plant.

Geezus! I think I would have smack'd that women good
She certainly has alot of nerve thats for sure :((

cb977 09-14-2010 08:01 AM

Oh my! I can't even write here what i would do!!! :poke:

Paul Mc 09-14-2010 08:11 AM

WOW - sometimes I never cease to be amazed at the boldness and rudeness of others. At least ask first, and then take no as meaning no!

TylerK 09-14-2010 08:33 AM

Wow. Have to say, I got furious just reading that. I don't usually swear a lot, but she'd have gotten an earful of very loud profanity had she done that to one of my plants.

Wow, I would have been really mad at her as well.

If she HAD known what she was talking about then maybe a suggestion... but never grabbing the plant and trying to break it while the owner protests. That's just not on

She must have been dropped on her head as a kid.

this is a little different from your story but i too had an "incident" with a neighbor. she walks by and sometimes drops by for a cup of coffee with mother. so one day she went outside and eyed one of my vandas hanging from a tree and asks oh so cleverly "is that an orchid TOO" after seeing some of the lovely blooms inside. i uneasily replied yes and as she went up to it noticing that it wasnt attached to the branch but just hanging then petted it, examining it............i took it inside after she left. no way that old sack was gonna have a plant to, less she forks over $3o, then we MIGHT talk ;)

RJSquirrel 09-30-2010 04:46 AM

they never a mean old "HIT" squirrel around when ya need one :)....

I can be hired to make house calls on special occasions...

And thats just for nuts :)

I watered someones DEAD phal at work once. I felt so bad about it bec it wasnt mine #1 and #2 it was freekin dead. Made me think about how I would feel if someone took it on themselves to water my plant. I had to email her and apologize for trying to tend to her plant. I also promised I would never touch her plant again and if she wanted to kill it that was her business...Please forgive me...

She emailed me back totally confused :rofl::rofl:..It wasnt her plant..wrong person!!!

CTB 09-30-2010 04:52 AM

The Nerve, sounds like she wanted a start, and you wouldn't share, me either!!!!!!!!!!!!

johnblagg 09-30-2010 12:01 PM

Rude is the nicest thing I could say ...and stupid @%$ get away from that is the next nicest ....when you work in a service position and go into peoples homes it is not as a guest and you should not touch what your not specificly there to fix end of story.
I would have been pissed for sure ....I was leaving Houston when Katrina was heading that way in the mass evacuation they advised and while at a store in the 300 mile long traffic jam and someone reached into my vehicle through the open window and picked up my flat screen nmonitor while I was in the store paying ....I came out and had a few chioce words to say the man holding my monitor had the lame excuse I was just showing it to my friends ....LOL right, My first words were ...WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOUR ARE DOING!!!!! and I do not think they would have been out of line in your case either

Jennyfleur 09-30-2010 01:03 PM

Oh my, that is a definate Yikes! :bad:
So much so, I think we're all running out of different smilies to use!!

frostedeyes 09-30-2010 11:24 PM

my god if that happens to me... i would be in jail for killing her! nobody cant touch my orchids... and only i can have the choice to throw away or kill my orchids!

frostedeyes 09-30-2010 11:28 PM

and if ever i killed her... i would stuffed her inside the drum and make an organic fertilizer out of her
