Madevallia veitchianna - My very first Masda bloom

So finally my Masdevallia veitchianna has opened for me

I bought this plant as BS about a year ago and it tried to spike in June/July but the bud blasted. Now it's opened it's first flower and my first ever Masdevallia flower. :cheer:

The flower is not as large as I've seen on some veitchianna, but it's just soooo pretty!

Also, I have a second spike which is about the size the first one blasted at, so I'm hoping it gets through to flowering like this one. :crossfing:

Rosie, It's beautiful!

quiltergal 09-09-2010 03:14 PM

It's stunning Rosie! Nice job blooming it! :bowing I love Masdies but unless it's temperature tolerant it won't do well here. My summers are too hot.

jrodpad 09-09-2010 03:16 PM

That really is something - nice work Rosie. That is one spectacular first result. Send pics of bud #2 if/when she opens.

What a beaut!

Rosie: wonderful. I love veitchiana

Duane McDowell 09-09-2010 08:28 PM

Fantastic, Rosie! Great color and form. The size is all about culture and temperature. Keep strong roots on it - your winter blooms will be bigger then the summer ones. Congrats on a fabulous orchid.

SOOOOO beautiful!!

Hi Rosie

Very pretty...

I have managed to get my first flower as well...but the flower is not perfect. It's a bit lopsided unless it just takes a bit more time to open more. Here's a photo with some other blooms.

Cheers

John

Nice Masdie John. Are those Coelogynes hanging in full bloom in the same pic. Looks like cristata and masengeana. Gorgeous

s.kallima 09-10-2010 12:46 AM

Very nice for a first Masdevallia !!!

RosieC 09-10-2010 03:26 AM

Thanks everyone

A slug or something has taken a very slight nibble overnight  but it's only slight and I'm still so pleased I've succedded with this. Now just got to get the amabilis healthy enough to flower (it's doing OK, just there were only a few good roots when I got it, though I can see it's put out more and new shoots this year).

I really thought I would struggle with Masdies but it seems that even when this cool growing veitchianna was in the house last winter (in the coolest spot I could find next to a part open window) it liked me and grew well, now it's in my greenhouse and has almost doubled in size over the summer and is now flowering.

Growth of any sort makes you feel you must be doing something right... but flowers are even better :cloud9:

Thanks for the tip Duane, well it will be getting cooler temps out in the green house over the winter and this second bud has started during cooler temps so we'll see how that does.

Triffid 09-10-2010 02:20 PM

:cheer: Well done you!
And those Photos are fantastic also!

JP020366 09-11-2010 02:29 AM

Hi Rosie

Thanks for that. The Coelogynes are Flaccida, Unchained Melody (alba) and Cristata.

Nice to have spring here i tell you!

Cheers

John

Fantastic Rosie - what a gorgeous bloom!

greenbean 09-12-2010 01:29 AM

Congratulations Rosie! Way to go!!! :)

I lost my first Masdie. I think the mineral content at my school and the high temps the first couple months in my dorm room were too much for it. Then I left it with my parents in a better environment, but they couldn't take care of it properly. I'll definitely be trying Masdies again someday, but not until I'm out of school and settled down somewhere. lol

RosieC 09-12-2010 04:59 AM

Thanks everyone!

Evan... water quality and temps are a big thing for these. I set up my greenhouse with Masdies in mind and I got a rainwater collection set up for them as well. Another tip I got here on OB was to pot them porus clay, the evaporation from the clay causes it to cool, so as long as they are damp on hot days their roots will stay cooler and they are happy that way. It seems to be working as the two I have seem to be doing well.

Tindomul 09-12-2010 02:05 PM

OMGosh!! Wow, what a gorgeous beauty. I have been too chicken to try these species (subsection Coccineae) due to their need to be in really cool conditions. But now I'm thinking you inspired me that I should give it a gamble.

RosieC 09-12-2010 02:55 PM

I took a gamble buying this one, then another gamble buying a second before I even knew if this one was going to be successful... I seem to have a tendency to do that even though I set out thinking I'll just get one to try :bushing:

I'm soooo pleased with this success... not just the flower but a plant that is bigger than when I bought it.

goofy 09-15-2010 01:54 PM

wow! awesome color!

IncredibleOrchids 09-15-2010 02:00 PM

GORGEOUS!!!!

Izzie 09-16-2010 12:30 PM

It blows me away Rosie! I love sunset colors.

RosieC 09-16-2010 04:59 PM

Thanks everyone.

I have no idea how long these flowers last. It's been open just over a week now but I don't know what to expect. The second spike is still growing well

JennS 09-16-2010 06:08 PM

It is beautiful. I wish I could grow them but they won't grow here. :( you are doing a great job!

Junebug 09-16-2010 09:38 PM

Your flower is spectacular and so is your photo. I love the vibrant colors. Can't grow masdies where I live. Perhaps I should move to a colder climate. Congratulations on your success and thank you for sharing.

RosieC 09-17-2010 06:40 AM

Thanks Jenn and Junebug... I go out and stand gazing at it several times a day, I just love it

I decided not to bring it inside to enjoy the flower as that would probably shock it and cause it to drop quicker... there is quite a temp difference between the greenhouse and the house.

camille1585 09-17-2010 09:30 AM

I love love love the color!! Saw your pics on FB, but never got around to looking at your thread here. I might try to get one of these, if you can grow it in the UK, I'm sure I can manage to grow it in NL if I stay there. But if I move back to FR it might be too hot for it.

Have you taken some landscape shots of it? It would make great calendar material for next year!

Kaykay 09-17-2010 09:44 AM

Well done Rosie! Beautiful bloom!

No. The night after I took this shot a slug or somthing took a nibble out of it  It still looks gorgeous and I'm still able to enjoy the flower, but it's not up to a calendar shot anymore :(

There is another spike/bud growing though so we'll see when that opens.

I grow this in my greenhouse as my house is too warm for it. Last winter I gew it in a spare room which we didn't heat and it was next to a window which was open a crack. I'm going to have to heat the greenhouse just a little over the winter to ensure nothing out there freezes but plan to keep it at just arround 5C which is what it was getting down to where it was last winter and what I've heard it needs.

The other trick which seems to be working so far, is to grow in porous clay as that can cool it well in the summer.

DelawareJim 09-17-2010 10:24 AM

Rosie;

What a beautiful flower. I love the colour and partterning.

I didn't realise this was your new avatar pic until now.

I've got to get one of these.

Cheers.
Jim

Just sooo pretty is right. It glows.

RosieC 09-20-2010 05:08 AM

Thanks Jerry & Jim,

Jerry, I know... I'm just in :cloud9:

RosieC 10-02-2010 04:26 AM

I didn't know what to expect for length of time blooming but it's now been open over 3 weeks so I'm really pleased because that's not a short lived flower like I thought it might be.

Bolero 10-02-2010 05:54 AM

Lovely, congratulations on your first Masdevallia bloom.

It sounds like your plant is happy. :goodjob

Tindomul 10-02-2010 07:29 PM

Woo-hoo Rosie!!!

King_of_orchid_growing:) 10-02-2010 09:38 PM

Masdevallias are not short lived flowers. The minis can last for as long as an entire week (yup, the full 7 days).

Congrats. Good job!
