Mormodes punctata

This was sold as Mormodes flactifoxaigneo, which actually is not a valid species at all. Probably the vendor (Jumbo Orchids) was not sure whether Mormodes fractiflexum or Mormodes igneum (both species very similar and often considered the same).

I have contacted the specialist in Mormodes and he identified it as Mormodes punctata...

quite interesting plant, with a not very strong fragrance (I was specting something stronger)

Interesting plant Ramon, strange that does not have a strong fragance.

Nice. My punctata will open in a couple days, interesting to compare the two. I also have Mormodes flactifoxaigneo, which is spiking. Vegetatively the two I have are completely different.

I wish this genus wasn't such a mess.

Yes, Bruno. I was also very surprised. At the beginning I thought it was me, because I have a cold now. But I asked two other people to try to smell it and the yall confirmed what I knew: a very soft fragrance... not a very nice one, but also not disgusting...t also not

Cool, Looking forward to see the pictures :)

Where did you get your "flactifoxaigneo" from? Jumbo Orchids or Pine Ridge Orchids (which at ethe end is again Jumbo Orchids) This species does not exist at all. As I mention before, you have igneum and fractiflexum, but according to Gostavo Salazar (Mormodes specialist at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico) both are synonyms. He is the one who identified this plant as M. punctata.

Aceetobe 01-13-2010 02:39 PM

Both came from Pine Ridge. Vegetatively the plants are very different from each other, and from another punctata that I have.

Its too bad about the weak scent. The plant looks young though, maybe this is the problem? My first bloom Stans will often only have a strong fragrance for the first couple of hours and then it goes away.

I like very much the last picture Ramon, first ones are also nice but the last one is a winner.

Thanks, Bruno! :)

Lovely flowering and it's another new one for me to see. Thanks for sharing.

So - the plant I got from Pine Ridge labeled as Mormodes punctata opened up exactly like this one.

The one I got from Pine Ridge labeled Mormodes flactifoxaigneo will open in a couple weeks. Must have been a label mixup on yours, as I'm sure Pine Ridge got these both from Jumbo.

Actually, the label mixup is apparently coming from Jumbo Orchids... Mormodes flactifoxaigneo does not exist at all... ;) Mormodes igneum and Mormodes flactiflexa are considered to be the same species. I think that probably someone (I said Jumbo, because my plant, as well as those from Pineridge, comes from Jumbo Orchids) was not very sure, or had both names and end up with this... I contacted Pineridge asking for more information about this "species/hybrid" (Mormodes flactifoxaigneo) and their reply was that they bought it from Max and Andy Chen (Jumbo) and treat it like any other Catasetinae... not really answering my question, but letting me know they did not know either what it was...

I have sent pictures to Dr. Salazar (the world authority in Mormodes) and he is who identified this as Mormodes punctata, and provided further information that this species is very close to the Mormodes igneum complex, and that he keeps it as a separate species only based on the form of the lip.

As per labelling plants from Jumbo Orchids... They have great plants, but also a big chaos with the IDs of many of their plants... Many plants still labelled as Catasetum are actually Clowesias or Clowesetum, and some of their Cycnoches are totally misidentified. If you ever order Cycnoches chlorochilon from them, be sure you will actually receive Cycnoches warscewiczii...

Aceetobe 01-26-2010 06:46 PM

What I'm saying is that I received both Mormodes punctata and "Mormodes flactifoxaigneo" from Pine Ridge, and thus from Jumbo.

The thing that I have labeled Mormodes punctata is really punctata.

The thing that I have labeled Mormodes flactifoxaigneo from Jumbo is most likely Mormodes igneum.

So there was a double mixup. #1 Jumbo messed the flactifoxaigneo tag up. #2 somebody swapped punctata for flactifoxaigneo tag on _your_ plant - because the other ones from Jumbo labeled "punctata", really are punctata.

This was Jumbo Orchid again, as the plant came directly from them :)

Aceetobe 01-29-2010 05:39 PM

Out of curiosity, what is the minimum order for Jumbo?

kavanaru 01-29-2010 06:14 PM

if yopu order from them to Europe, you could have an order 400€.. however, you can also order directly from them once or twice per year when one of them come to London and bring plants to their main contact in Europe, or wait every once in a while when they come. You can also contact Water Orchids, who are freuqently in Europe, to bring you plants from Jumbo.

If you are asking for my plant, it was brought directly by Chiaching.

kavanaru 01-29-2010 06:15 PM

but being very honest, I still do not understand the reason of your question...

Aceetobe 01-29-2010 06:25 PM

They don't come to America often - I think last time was the World Orchid Congress. I was wondering because I'd like to buy some plants, and would possibly organize a group order if possible.

:D

I know there plants have some problems, but I'd still like to buy some of the ones I can't get elsewhere.

I know what you mean :) they are a bit messy with the IDs, but they have greta plants too... I am now waiting for some plants from them too...

if you find someone who speak chinese, ask for help as their website in chinese is more complete than the english one.
