Hi everyone!! Looks like with the superb advice on the OB and the help of SuperThrive I am FINALLY able to grow orchids and not kill them. Even the ones I tried to kill are recovering nicely!:blushing:
I have roots and leaves popping out everywhere! I wanted to say big THANK YOU to everyone who has talked me down off the ledge, gave me advice on growing, lighting, EVERYTHING. I truly believe if it weren't you all, my collection would be non-existent! :thankyou:gh

Well, here they are!!!

WhiteRabbit 03-29-2009 04:29 PM

:iagree: :wtg:

awesome job amanda!
I am interested in how you have the 'sick' plants - just some rocks with a bit of water in a cup? I have a catt that has been declining quickly and think I may like to try your method!

way good growing!

nenella 03-29-2009 04:35 PM

Well Done Amanda! excellent work! keep it up and keep us posted!

Amanda L 03-29-2009 04:39 PM

Thanks, WhiteRabbit!! Yeah, the sickies get a tall plastic container with some stones and water. I mist them daily with SuperThrive and have noticed tremendous progress with them. I didn't take the same approach with the catts and it seems it took them forever to start growing roots and new pbulbs. I will never run out of SuperThrive, I have had a great deal of growth since using it.

Amanda L 03-29-2009 04:45 PM

Thanks, nenella! I'm so happy I can barely contain myself! I can't wait for some flowers though! That's the next step!

Grandma M 03-29-2009 05:30 PM

Congratulations!!!!!!!!! They look great. You are doing something right.

Marilyn

Grandma M 03-29-2009 05:35 PM

Will you please explain what the lights are over your plants? I could use one like that.

Marilyn

Ross 03-30-2009 07:29 AM

I know the feeling, when all of a sudden things click and the roots go wild! Nice job and show us pictures when they finally reward you with blossoms!

Ethan 03-30-2009 08:53 AM

Nice job, Amanda - Congrats! Looks like you have a lot of activity going on there!

l.ania 03-30-2009 11:44 AM

WOW! Congrats! :) So many new roots, growths and keikis.... Amazing :D I also want some! ;)

Amanda L 03-30-2009 05:57 PM

Thank you everyone for your kind words of encouragement!! That's one of the many reasons I LOVE this forum!!!

Marilyn-The lights are desk lamps I bought at WalMart, they have "daylight" CFL bulbs in them. Pretty easy setup for a newbie like myself.

Ross-I hope I do get blooms out of these chids. I'm not sure how that is going to work out. I'm worried about the type of lights I have. Great for growing, but I keep reading that the bulbs I have don't have a wide enough range of the light spectrum for blooms. Any suggestions? I have 6500k bulbs in both lamps.

Amanda, I was fascinated to see the photos of your dendrobiums rooting with stones and water and would like to try it on a couple of mine. Did you mist with straight SuperThrive or was it diluted? We don't have SuperThrive in Canada but I have Thrive Alive which is a B1 supplement and I think worth a try. Thanks!

:)

Ranchnanny 03-31-2009 01:12 AM

Amanda, your chids look great congrats......

Shirley, I mix the SuperThrive per the directions on the package and just put it in my misting bottle. I make sure that the roots don't touch the water in the container. I secure the plant by clipping it to a stick so they don't fall over. I'm so glad that I can contribute something here!! I'm excited that people are interested in the way I help my sickies along.

Thanks everyone!! I'm so excited with the progress I've made in orchid growing!

Jkelee 03-31-2009 06:59 PM

Way to go chic!! You got it 'going on' girl!!
Your chids suuuuure do love their mommy!!!
Smilin' at ya every day with news roots coming your way!!

Amanda L 04-02-2009 07:27 PM

Shirley;
Superthrive is most definitely available in Canada. I have it in my hydroponics shop. I'd suggest you check some other stores if the one that sold you thrive alive told you its not available here Also is the thrive alive Red or Green? Both are similar to superthrive, but one(green) is organic while the other(red) is not.

Shirley 04-03-2009 09:49 PM

Thank you, phearamedusa. We have a couple of hydroponic stores here so I'll check them out! I understood that Superthrive was not available here.

:)

phearamedusa 04-04-2009 12:35 AM

If you can't find it, drop me a pm.

Corwin 04-13-2009 05:30 AM

You can find Superthrive in France or in the UK too

Blueszz 04-13-2009 05:49 AM

Thanks, Blueszz!! It was easy to post so many pics, because there is so much going on. I'm just glad I have the OB to share my happiness with!!!
