I was shopping at IKEA the other day and happened to have my camera with me. Saw something quite interesting amongst the orchids.. Thought yous might be interested.. I don't think this one classifies as a peloric orchid. (Or does it?) It's just beautifully deformed. ;)

What do you think?

Call_Me_Bob 01-24-2011 02:35 PM

wow! thats pretty cool. i think that would be called a mutation, i think perloric is when the other petals look somewhat like lips. but dont take my word for it!

camille1585 01-24-2011 02:40 PM

Weird! I guess that it if was an animal is would be like conjoined twins. Don't think that it would be considered peloric, peloria is when flower parts look like the lip (I think).

Daethen 01-24-2011 02:44 PM

Yes, peloric is when all three petals try to become lips. What you found is more like conjoined twins. A mutation of some sort. Don't know if it would continue each blooming or not. Was it just the one flower that was that way?

Whoa!! That is so cool! I woulda picked that bad boy up! Was it just the one flower?

Reminds me of a siamese twin!

Its a Monster

A couple of years ago an Epiphylum strictum I have did that with the stamens. It was a one-time occurance.

cool!!!!!!!!!!!

Camille -> It really is a conjoined twin orchid! I didn't come to think of that!
Poppyseed -> I didn't buy it cause I wasn't sure it would bloom at all later on.. Probably should have. It would have been interesting to see what it would have done next year! X)
Daethen-> I think it was just this one..I didn't look closely enough to say for sure.. there were two flower spikes and the other one seemed to have totally normal bloom.
fotofashion -> do you have a picture of yours? It would be interesting to see.

It seemed to be a pretty healthy plant: good leaves, good roots and plenty of flowers! Maybe it had been induced to bloom and that's why it was going so wild?

Triffid 01-25-2011 06:33 AM

Very interesting! Was it just the one flower or were the all like that?

On a side note: Here's an example of an orchid which shows distinctive peloria.
