I visited Fender’s Flora, Inc. in Venice, Florida today to check out the nursery and to hopefully add a few chids to my collection. I want to tell you that I had a great time, and ended up with 5 hybrid cattleya crosses to house with my other chidren…
I met Bill Fender, who was wonderful and took his time to show me and my friend around his greenhouse. He talked freely about his hybridization program, explaining what he was hoping to achieve by taking this parent and crossing it with that with respect to flower coloration, fragrance and bloom time(s). His prices are very fair, and all of his stock looked quite healthy; many of the plants had multiple leads…very robust! He did have material other than cattleya alliance, but I stuck with this genus because it is his specialty, and I was interested in getting plants that were hybrid crosses and not clones. The photo I’ve posted here is of the five plants I purchased. The small numbers on the pots correspond with the names below:
1 Pot. (Pot. Susan Fender `Valencia` x Pot. Frank Gilmore `Mendenhall`)
2 Pot. (Pot. Carolina Splendor x Blc. Goldenzelle `Taida`, HCC/AOS)
3 Blc. Against the Wind
4 Pot. Good Vibrations
5 Pot. (Pot. Jimmy Cook `Golden Beach` x Blc. Bryce Canyon `Splendiferous`, AM/AOS)
Fender’s Flora does ship around the US…I’m not sure about shipments abroad. If you’re interested in visiting their website, here’s the link:
