How's Orchid Inn?

Has anyone purchased plants from the Orchid Inn? I was thinking of getting a few Cattleya species from them. If someone could share their experience, I'd appreciate it.

That's Sam Tsui's place, and he's best known for spectacular paphs and phrags. I suspect his catts will be equally nice.

His Paphs are well grown. I have several that are over 6 years old and they have always thrived in less than optimal conditions.

All but one of my Paphs are from him and they are incredible. Not only healthy but the bloom quality (of the ones I have bloomed so far) is superb. I was planning one getting a few more at Redland fest this year, but after that was cancelled, I kind of forgot... So thank you for the reminder, lol!! I would have no problem ordering anything from him

I was just going to order some Catts... but you've all convinced me to try a few Paphs/Phrags as well!

Got them today. Nice plants, great size, well packed. The Paph and Phrag were especially nice.

Jeff- I'm a Phrag nut and I've always thought Gruss was a cross that should have interesting possibilities but I've never managed to take the plunge.
The flowers you get seem to have a huge diversity in size, color, everything which has scared me away because I can't figure out if it's the individual breedings or it's driven by culture. If you just google it and look at the images you'll see what I mean.
I will be very interested to see what this one blooms out like for you.

-Actually, your photos on the forum inspired to get Phrags and Paphs. I recall that you had some fantastic multiflorals on your porch earlier this year.

And yes, I noticed the variation among the photos of Phrag. Olaf Gruss online. Not just the flower shape and color but the size of the plant and thickness of the leaves as well. The good strains looked too good to pass - I thought I'd give it a shot.

Since the parents of the cross Phrag. besseae and pearcei look quite different, I guess it's not surprising to see all the variation in the cross? Color certainly could be influenced by culture.

I'll keep you updated! This is my first Phrag (and now 3 Paphs)... we'll see how it does under my care. The one from Orchid Inn had 3 growths.
