I grow all my orchids in my Manhattan apartment....its not hard at all as long as I distribute my window space equally to them....the hard part is maintenance once they are established....the inconstant day to day weather conditions can be quite tricky

I will, I'll use either sphag and charcoal or coconut fiber.
I find that hanging them bare root does not work well in a home environment because humidity is more difficult to keep constant. Also, this way we don't have to water every day.

Hey Bud/Vandalover I have a question. I got a Vanda Manuvadee 'Blue' and it came in a nice plastic hexagonal "ultimate basket" but I had to take it out so it was bare root for traveling back to Jamaica with it, i also had no space left to carry the basket with me sooo. Now I have it rested in a tall 6" plastic pot for now until I have the basket sent to me from Florida. By the way this "ultimate basket" is the best hanging basket or standing basket i have seen period; its even aesthetically pleasing to the eye!
I think I am gonna order 100 or 200 of those plastic "ultimate basket" because i have a ton of strap leaves that i ordered and need to pot them.

But until then I wanted to pot it. I have some 6 inch clay pot with huge holes; essentially a clay basket/pot that i wanted to use because the wooden baskets eventually rot. I wondered if a medium of peat moss chunks, horticultural charcoal, lava rocks, and red pine bark would be fine? Because I know clay pots tend to hold moisture a bit longer than the plastic.

the clay pot is good with vanda mix sprinkled around the roots....make sure to also add small clay shards with the mix or some hydroton....it will help you keep moisture longer and water less....

The mixture you mentioned should be just fine. Be sure it can dry out quickly, no more than a week. If it isn't drying fast enough, remove some of the medium. I do that in winter when our humidity is very high here.
