Bryan, what a beautiful bloom! And congrats on your first Vanda to bloom for you! However I am sorry that it is damaged. My first Vanda to bloom did so recently, and had the same type of issue. Turns out I had thrips and spider mites sucking at the buds as they were trying to develop and open. Then Tucker told me that he treats his Vanda spikes/buds with insecticide to prevent this. So I lobbed off the sad looking spike of delapotated blooms and soaked the whole plant with Ortho rose & bloom insecticide. Hope this helps!

I will look past the splotches to the beauty of it. Sorry I don't grow vandas, but it is lovely.

That is a beautiful flower. You are lucky the buds didnt blast on you. It must be insects that did that or the dehydration from transit and the stress of it all... that is a hybrid and nowadays, they make them in such a way to bloom several times a year for cut flower florists bussiness... if that is a specie it will bloom only once a year or twice if youre lucky. Good growing and keep on posting your blooms!

I've had a similar problem. If I have a vanda in spike, would a pyrethrum + garlic spray be safe and sufficient on a spike?

I would think that the pyrethrum and garlic should work. I would look closely to see if it is insect damage. It may be as Bud suggested, just damage and stress. I have seldom had an insect problem with vandas, but it is possible.

I occasionally see fine webs around and worry about spider mites, and I use a magnifying glass to spot them, but can't seem to see them so I figured that it's not a big enough problem to have to solve?
