Rhy. Gigantea - Orchid Board

Folks, some of this orchid's leaves are slightly wrinkled - they've been like that for sometime, - is that normal, Pls advise, thanks.

Looks healthy to me. They do tend to have a slight wrinkle to their leaves. Thats just how they are. Nice looking plant!!

The sphag might be keeping the roots too wet. You might want to remove the sphag and check for rot. Rhyncos grow well when grown in slat baskets with a few chunks of large grade bark and large grade charcoal, and watered once or twice a day.

Thanks Jax & June. I've spread the shag over the basket, but mostly its large charcoal / brick pieces insides. I use sphag for all my orchids (no yellow leaves yet ;o), since its a dry weather in this geography - I live in Bangalore, India. Do any of you have a Rhy ?... if so, how frequent have you observed them spike / flower - and any tips to coax this one to spike ?. Thanks again.

I have over a hundred in stock in the nursery.

Wrinkled leaves and yellowing dropping leaves (a couple a year) are normal on a healthy plant.

They need to be watered daily but will wrinkle in spike of that, especially the albas. For some reason the reds do not show it as much.

They are in the Vandaceous family but can grow at lower lights than other Vanda.

There is nothing you can do to induce flowers this time of year. In Florida they bloom in January-February and never at any other time,

Keep it healthy, lots of water and good bright light in the winter.

The plant looks healthy to me. Those usually have such a nice fragrance. Good growing job.

My Rhy.G., flowered in the winter... was in shade but with indirect bright light... I have now moved to a new residence and the light levels have reduced slightly than previous conditions.... seems healthy but with slight wrinkles (that's when I thought about inquiring with you guys - thanks the Forum). Have to observe him thru winter for the next spikes... - Do you recommend exposing the plant to bright light just before winter to coax a bit for the spikes ?. Pls advise, thanks again!

My Rhynco generally looses one or two base leaves at the onset of Spring as her new roots emerge. The spent leaves gradually shrivel and yellow before dropping, while the other leaves remain rigid and green. It grows well in bright indirect sunlight with daily waterings, twice in summer and once during winter. It initiates spikes at the onset of slightly cooler temperatures and the blooms are fully opened during the first week of January when the temperatures are much cooler. I bring my Rhynco indoors when the mercury drops below 48 degrees.

From where did you buy it? I need one like this... I have a seedling imported from Thailand, but I can't wait for 3 years
