Try a rhynchostylis. They don't need as much light as Vandas, and are somewhat drought tolerant. I had a Rhynchostylis gigantea when I lived in Utah, and it grew very well on a windowsill. If you want something cold tolerant, try a Vanda coerulea, or a hybrid of it (which should tolerate some cold).
I wouldn't recommend Kagawara, Mokara, or any fancy intergeneric containing exotic Vandaceous plants. These are generally warm-growing tropical plants that like a sticky atmosphere, lots of water, and high light.
