Ok here is the new spike on the pink var. I think the purple will be finished blooming by the time this one starts. Hopefully this one is fragrant too! If only that keiki would send out a spike now too that would be great!

Whatever became of those Hatos' orchids? Did the pink bloom? Was it fragrant?

Well funny you should ask! The "pink" was mislabled and not 'Mem Louis Hatos' after all. It was a beautiful pink Ascda something. It is the plant in my avatar. Not fragrant.

But the purple 'Louis Hatos' has just sent out 2 nubbins. Today it is clear that one is a keiki and it is growing fast. The other is probably another bloom spike. Too high up the plant for a root (I hope).

Do you have this plant, too?

I don't have that one in particular which is beautiful but I do have several of his. He lives in my neighborhood and i happened to meet him and he was nice enough to answer every question I had plus he sold me some at very fair prices. He will be speaking at the South Fla Orchid Soc meeting on Aug 20. If you get a chance try to go and see some more of his hybrids. They are truly spectacular. This is one of his, a closeup the other one s are too large but they are on my photo album.

I lost the tags so I called them today and Mary was good enough to give me the whole history. "It is 1316! Ascda 'Louis Hattos', a cross between Ascda John De Biase and V .. or Ascda ... something.. Mary Motes.." I got lost about there. I will ask her again at the Redlands show and write it down this time!
I question whether this plant really is Ascda. Louis Hatos, the hybrid of Ascda. John DeBiase and Vanda tessellata. I do see what may be tessellata influence in your plant but more apparent to me - from the color, markings, and slight twist of the petals - is Vanda coerulea. (Vanda coerulea is in Louis Hatos' family tree but it's five generations back)

Martin and Mary Motes have won several awards for their Ascda. Louis Hatos. The flowers of the awarded plants have full, round segments and the markings are quite different from your plant. If your plant really is Ascda. Louis Hatos, it may be worth bringing it to an AOS judging center for discussion.

Whatever its name, it's a beautiful flower! Good growing!

Beautiful Piece! I live in Florida too. What is your routine for taking care of your Vanda?

Cneos, you know I am very confused now about both these plants! Mary Motes answered my questions over the phone without a picture and she could have asumed I was talking about 2 different plants. I need to take pics of these plants to someone for clarification.

SP, I don't do anything to my vandas except hang them outside out of direct sunlight. I water them with the hose 2-3 times per week when it isn't raining every day. I try to remember to fertilize but only get to it 2-3 times a year. Very easy to grow. They really just take care of themselves.

Sorry if my post confuses ... perhaps if you send a picture (or bring the plant) to the Motes', they can get closer to identifying your plant.

Default Beautiful Blooms!

Hi Susie,
Your Ascocenda is beautiful...way to go! Here's the scoop on its name and parentage...I have 2 of these blooming in my collection. It is Ascda. Mem. Louis Hatos (V. tessellata ‘Mary Motes’ FCC/AOS x Ascda. John de Biase ‘Fuch’s Indigo’ FCC/AOS). I bought both of mine from Motes too. I'll post photos of the two I have. The first is just Ascda. Mem. Louis Hatos , while the second is labeled Ascda. Mem. Louis Hatos 'Motes'. these are the first photos I've posted, so let's hope it works.

Dgenovese1, thanks for the great pics! Now I can compare them side-by-side with mine. Please tell me when you bought your plants and did they have tags on them? Mine just say 'purple' and 'pink' (???) So I called Mary and that it what started this whole thing. I know I will be able to resolve this issue if I am persistant. Please look at my other post where I have pics of the two plants in question together. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...nk-purple.html My plant labled 'pink' looks like your 'Ascada Mem Louis Hatos' The lighting is different so the color doesn't look the same, but the shape and markings are very similar. What do you think?
