Vanda Seedlings in s/h - Orchid Board

OK, my sister has given me a flask of vanda coerulea (approx 8 plants).

I am planning to put the seedlings in s/h.

Has anyone had any experiences with vanda 'seedlings' in s/h?

I wonder if vandas can be grown in s/h permanently if they adapt to s/h as seedlings?

Does anyone know this person who has grown his/ her vandas in s/h?

I know phal seedlings have a tough time adjusting to SH. As for vandas, try a few out and tell us how it works. I'm thinking of trying a Holc. in SH and if I do I'll also post results.

I did not have luck with vandas in S/H, you might ask more specifically in the semi-hydro forum. But Vandas typically need a wet, and then dry, and not constantly moist.

If they are ready for breaking out of the flask, typically they just throw them in a big pot together, and then maybe put some bark in with them, but although s/h is great, some plants it has been my experience, do better without. And I use s/h for my paphs (which do great) although I have lost a smaller phal with s/h...

*edit* ok, looking at the pics, it appears you've got s/h working for you with your vandas... hey, if it works for you, great. My s/h skills aren't the best. let us know how that works!

The photos of the mature vandas in s/h do not belong to me, they have been shown a few times around our board. I am trying to find the person who has successfully converted their adult vandas to s/h.
(I have only managed to convert a Neostylis from bark to s/h.)

I wonder if vandas can adapt to s/h from flask.

I have successfully moved phals from flask to s/h, that is the only way I know how.

Give me a couple of month, I will keep you guys posted.

Yeah, I think babies might be ok, but just be sure you're not getting any mold on the roots, and watch them carefully for the first few weeks. If you've had good success with moving flasked phals to s/h, you're probably in a good position to know what's happy or not. My two needed to be dry between waterings, and I watered them too often I think and it ended up molding the roots.

If s/h doesn't work out for you, I would suggest just use the same small containers, tie them up, and soak them every day or two. You can see this guy here is the one that had problems in s/h, the shriveled roots were what happened. and once I started soaking, the nice juicy roots came out

I have been very impressed with the results of your vandas in vase/ pots.

I have had OK results (no flowers, just a few roots) with the same set up, however I think I need a 'high tech' tank like yours to increase the humidity!

That is why I am considering s/h. My phals are doing really well in s/h. I need my vandas to follow their lead!
