Neofinetia falcata 'Setsuzan'

The variegation is not very prominent on this one, it's going to get blasted with high light as soon as the flowers are done. This is the second spike of the season; the first spike also had three flowers. Too bad they didn't open at the same time! As usual the scent is amazing! This one, for some odd reason, has acquired a slight coconut hint added to the typical Fukiran scent!

Thanks! I love the pot too! Got it at work, $3! I love the way it smells! I have the best smelling room right now! I have this one, my Den. moniliforme, my Agrcm. didieri, and two novelty phals all in bloom and all smelling amazing!

How high/low have you been keeping the light?
I ask because I am curious if light has anything to do with this variant. I was told that Byakko needs lower light because it's a white tiger stripe. And essentially, Byakko is just Setsuzan but with more variegation.

So with that being said, should we put our Byakko/Setsuzan in high light or low light to bring out variegation? I ponder about this because I wouldn't want my byakko to lose its stripes :S


In any case, great plant! Document what you do and record changes if you have the time :-) I'd love to do some compare and contrast!

I've been keeping this pretty low, with my Phalaenopsis. I am a bit confused. I brought this show Satomi and ask what to do to get the stripes back, she said that this one needs at least 60-70% shade. So I kept it low. And nothing happened. So I'm not sure what to do. Gonna experiment with higher light. I'll let you know what happens!

I keep mine under fairly high light-- not quite catt but higher than phal light and mine maintains great variegation. I also have other tigers, like kinrokaku that seems to love the higher light.

Seems to make sense Ryan, I'm just confused as to why Satomi would say that this specific neo needs lower light. Oh well, it'll see what I can do! In the mean time, I'll be smelling it repeatedly!

Yeah that is confusing. Variegation is a weird thing but it seems that in general, white areas get whiter still as the high light wears down the chlorophyll as that tissue is unable to replace and produce more as regular green tissue is under those high light conditions. Then again maybe I have that all wrong.

I'm wondering if the variegation of 'Setsuzan' (and apparently Byakko) is the white variegation that can burn in high light. And other tiger stripes may be the cream color that gets more intense in high light. Either way though, I think I've been giving too much shade.

She says to keep em in low light because it's a white variegation that will burn in higher lighting. If you look at Setsuzan/Byakko and compare it to something like Kogane-nishiki, you can see an obvious difference in color. Very light yellow = White in the Neofinetia world.
