Soon the major news networks will be broadcasting on fears of a new fiscal bubble... that being japanese orchids.

The remodeling of our kitchen and upgrading some photo equipment I've been meaning to do for a while has effectively shut off plant funds Flash equipment is FAR more expensive than the average neo, as it turns out.

Matt mentioned this vendor back on July 10th, but at that time they had Fukiran books only, now I see they also have some plants.

Also for buy it now, there are three Neofinetia Handbooks: 2003 edition, 2004 edition, and 2005 edition. Each one is $30.00.

EDIT: Oh, I see who you mean. The books are speech1248.

The plants are bill_joyce6ymz. He's the guy who, in some past listings, had borrowed descriptions verbatim from japanesorchids. He only has one negative feedback and that was from someone who thought a tiny Seiryujishi was too small (although I see it exactly as pictured): "Neos are miniature., The plant received is a micro mini." Duhr!!! I see in bill_joyce6ymz history as a buyer that up into last fall he purchased a lot of plants from japaneseorchids.
I was also advised later, by a poster familiar with the latter seller via their flickr photos, that bill_joyce6ymz is actually a she, not a he (perhaps the account is used jointly by a couple).

Actually, I think the bubble has already slowly deflated on many of the popular varieties as they became more widely propagated by cloning (as opposed to by division) and as the limited types that will reproduce true from seed by selfing are produced in quantity. Often Seed Engei's notes for a particular plant will point out that the price was is years past orders of magnitude higher.

Now if only Kinkirin would drop from 5-digit to 2- or 3-digit pricing I would be a happy camper.

Speaking of the biz side of fukiran, you might enjoy (or not) a thread on the slippertalk forum by an ultra-cynical naysayer, username Roth, from a couple years ago. Google the title: "Short note on neofinetia falcata cultivar disillusions".

I was really just referring to the run on ebay sales etc lately with this bunch of neo newcomers alone, not necessarily the broader sense that these plants are expensive but becoming affordable.

I was just looking for a hook to jump off on another interesting tangent, which could probably be a useful thread in it's own right.

But Jayfar, the new Neos up for bid seem like these came orginally from Seed Engai? They look suspiciously like, what do you call getting a gift and then turning around and giving the gift to someone else? The highly fabled Manj up for auction starts @ $120. @ least Seed Engei is lower!

I don't know; at least some of these are in square pots, unlike SE stuff and going back 2 years I don't see any buyer feedback from speech1248 to japaneseorchids and none of speech1248's feedbacks from sellers are from Neo dealers.

I don't see a problem with re-selling, people do it all the time. Some people even call the initial buy an investment.

Buy from Seed Engei, grow it a couple of years and sell it for more money.

I agree AnonYMouse, there is nothing wrong with reselling plants. That is what is great about eBay--as your stuff does have value to someone else. I wish though, that vendors would do like Seed Engei does with their auctions. They provide information and lots of pictures. Some of the most recent vendors have only a name and some information and one or two pictures. If I ever get to the point of selling my plants on eBay, I would follow Seed Engei's example.

This plant: Shitake Suruzume - Purple Tsuki is up for bid by this vendor. I have not seen such a tsuke, and the picture shows the plant. I'm interested in bidding on this plant. But I'm a little bit hesitant because there is not the kind of information that would give me confidence that the plant would be a good purchase.

Hmm, I think you may be right and Rich, of the couple that owns Mystic Orchid, is also an occasional OB poster under the name columbianwolf. Maybe I'll send him a PM asking him to chime in here.

Having now looked through all of speech1248's Neofinetia up for bid, I have to say it's a pretty impressive selection of of good-sized, healthy looking plants. It doesn't look like they're in Neo pots or net pots, so I'd be a little concerned about the condition of the buried roots, but looking at the condition of the growths, it doesn't appear to be an issue. You'd certainly want to repot/remound these appropriately immediately.

The search link below displays just the Neos from speech1248, so you don't have to scroll through all their other stuff.

speech1248 | neofinetia | eBay
