I don't know exactly, other than the wonderful reddish coloration, but it apparently came back down to earth bid-wise in recent minutes:

Bid retraction and cancellation history
Bidder Action Date of Bid and Retraction
c***1 ( 207 ) Retracted: US $187.50
Bid: Dec-31-13 10:20:05 PST
Retracted: Jan-01-14 18:14:32 PST
|
Now it's back at 80 with 1 bid, 20-some bids having been erased.

Goodness, I didn't know you could retract a bid...do you have to a reason or just say I retract. Lol
I looked at the close up pics of the Kishu if you look closely at the bottom it looks like quite a few leaves may have died or is this normal for this plant.

Thanks for the explanation link coffeecup. I'm glad to know that if I typed in 995.00, pressed enter, and then pressed "confirm bid" button, let my bid stand for a day, but before the bidding ends, I can still retract my bid.

We can pick some up when we go to Tokyo (Feb 10-20). Then you would still have 10 months of viewing pleasure
I think he told me they end up being around $30, plus shipping, but if you wanted one and an orchid, or course that would save the extra shipping (hehehe).

Oh my goodness no, there are no dead leaves!!! They are very purple and very healthy. We would never sell a plant that wasn't 100% healthy on Ebay or anywhere else. What makes this plant so desirable is that purple coloration.

I think what Ginger is referring to are the remaining bases of leaves that had died and fallen away naturally.

Oh my goodness no! There are no dead leaves on the plant, only very purple ones that are just as healthy as the green ones. NWO would never sell a plant that wasn't 100% healthy!!!
