okay, i totally understand about the decorative pot now. i now understand it needs the air
movement. since it needs this air movement is it okay to put the spaghnum ball into a wooden hanging basket?
if they need pot with holes in the sides for air movement, than how come they can be potted in japanese pots like this
|
because the bottom of this fancy pot has a HUGE hole

Raku pottery is a type of pottery developed in Japan. It is both a style of pottery and a firing process.
I think you would be best off looking for a Neofinetia or Fukiran pot. They are almost always styled like the one you posted earlier; ceramic, 3-footed, and bowl shaped. They can be quite beautiful and can get rather expensive.
Some examples are here:
Fukiran pot | Neofinetia falcata/Japanese orchid/Samurai orchid/SEED ENGEI
The inexpensive alternative is the plastic Neo. or Fukiran pot most of us grow in. Like these here-
plastic pot | Neofinetia falcata/Japanese orchid/Samurai orchid/SEED ENGEI
The plastic pots provide much more air circulation.
Cheers.

I'm leaving the question to be answered by Tracy or someone else. I rarely fertilize mine....but I thought the rule was 1/4 strength fertilizer every third of fourth watering during the active growth season and during the winter, no fertilizer what so ever. If I remember correctly, neo roots are sensitive to the fertilizer and will burn easily....if I am incorrect someone please correct me!

I fertilize mine with Dyna-Gro and KLN or with MSU fertilizer according to the label directions at every watering. (I try for about 125 ppm of Nitrogen) Both are Urea-free fertilzers that minimize pH swings and root burn.
Otherwise I fertilizer with Miracle Gro or whatever else I have on hand at 1/4 strength at every watering.
Either way, I usually flush with a mineral free water like plain rainwater, dehumidifier, air conditioner discharge, distilled, or R/O water once or twice a month to flush out any mineral buildup.
Cheers.
Jim

Is ib ok if I use use the same fert. I usewith my other orchids? I use either a 10-15-10 or a 15-30-15 at 1/4 strength at every watering. Is that ok? It only gets 50 ppm of nitrogen, cause to get a good total ppm I have to use lower strength
