Hello Tucker,

It took me a while to really know what medium works for this particular phalaeonopsis.I experimented actually and note their growth in that particular medium. If the orchids are still small like they can fit in the 6 inch pot I just use bark with sphagnum moss mix but I get tired because this medium will only last for 2 years but this will work for the smaller one which is the best for me and after 2 years anyway they would outgrow them that's how fast they grow,.When i move some of them to 8 inch pot i change it to coarse charcoal as this would provide a lot of air space underneath in combination with big coconut husk chopped into pieces (The one that you could buy in plastic) which provide good aeration as well because they are big and not small ones who has a tendency to fill those little airpockets and lastly with the perlite its white stuff and i just put them layer by layer.First the styrofoam peanuts for more aeration at the bottom, followed by coarse charcoal, then the coarse coconut husk then perlite then charcoal, coconut husk, perlite and so on and so forth till you reach the top.
fertilizer wise I put the dynamite ,from home depot this are granules every 3 months and weekly with the better gro orchid fertilizer when I water them.Happy growing man.

I love collecting Philippine species as well but for paphios. Keep up the great work.
I saw one posting here maybe it was zjan but he is from Cavite and saw all this gorgeous schillerianas and they are also cheap compared here .Did you ever try to bring some of those species ? I would like to do that when i go home just wondering about the protocol of bringing plants here .I know about the phytosanitary part just dont know how the system works.have you tried it?

Well I am not sure about the US. But in Canada, if I were to import an orchid species included appendix I. I have to get an importation permit, CITES and Phytosanitary certificates. Basically its a lot of work. You cant really get a CITES permits and Phytosanitary if the plants are wild collected or if you buy on a flea market. I do not know a lot of nursesries that issue these certificates. I do agree that they are dirt cheap. Especially if you time your vacation when the Philippine Orchid Society have a show. Usually around the last week of February to March.

Here are some pictures I took when I was there.

Hi Karate,
Your Phals are AMAZING!......
Can you help me to understand how you apply medium in layers?? I mean, it's difficult enough to even get it there to the roots and in the centre, never mind making a layered cake!
Thanks again!

Lilia

When I say layer by layer Im talking about the 8 inch pot since i dont use that medium in a 6 inch pot.Its literal as in layer by layer lol .Here's how I did them first the peanuts at the bottom may be an inch, then i put on the plant, then i put the coarse charcoal at least an inch thick around it followed by the coarse coconut 1 inch thick then the perlite . The Perlite is not a layer of an inch thick but I make sure that perlite goes evenly with the coconut husk like the perlite is mix with the coconut husk so it wont be all coconut husk of 1 inch thick but mix with perlite and then charcoal again another inch, then coco husk mix with perlite. My rationale here is that coconut husk retains water but mix with perlite it is not as compacted as it is but more airy and with the other layer of the pot with charcoal it remains dry and with good air movement because of the spaces in between them and the air pockets which would prevent root rot.Ill post pics and pls take a notice of what I did with the pots as well . Happy growing

Haha karate kid. My winter is very dry so I needed something to keep the moisture but because the Ma#2 is so big I didn't wanna risk putting it in a big pot of moss mix. So I gave S/H a whirl and I love it. You keep doing what you are doing. Your plants are out of this world! I just hope my Schills put on a display like yours someday!

Hey karate kid! My Ma#2 it's first two flowers just finished opening 4 more buds to go. Low count this time. I think it's because it still getting used to the semi hydro. Did yours open yet. Is like to see what yours look like. I don't know it might just be me but mine don't look like the pic from Norman's. I need to compare.
