Paph. Judge Philip 2spikes

This is the first paph I bought and began growing here in Philadelphia. I bought this plant in bloom at the Waldor Orchids greenhouse (about two years ago). At the time it had a previously bloomed growth (if i remember right) the growth in bloom an a new fan on the way, its a tiny bit bigger now... Needless to say... i caught the paph bug and now they're the majority of my collection.

It had one spike last year and this year it is happily showing off. the plant is vigorous! Two spikes are open and a third is under way, cant wait to have all three in bloom.

For reference this is a cross of Pinochio and Phillipinense. The tag says they are both parents are alba forms, but I doubt thats actually true since this is clearly pigmented.

It looks like a happy plant. Having 2 alba parents doesn't necessarily mean the offspring will be alba. I believe the alba gene is recessive.

Wow! That is a wonderful plant!!!! I am just getting into paphs and I hope someday to have one half as nice as yours. What are your favorites? Your easiest? What would you recommend for a beginner?

In order for alba to display in the parents then they must each have a pair of alba genes IF the alba gene is recessive. If that is the case then two alba parents will always throw alba offspring since they only carry recessive genes. It works the same way as the recessive blue eye gene in people.

Anyway, I have an alba form of Judge Philip that I can post for comparison.

I grow under t5 lights and ive had paphs for about two years (this one being the first). Maudiae types and sequential bloomers, or crosses with sequential bloomers (primulinum, liemianum, moquettianum, etc.) do really well for me. They are vigorous plants.

I also have a spicerianum that is growing really well. Got it as a small seedling a few months back and has 3 new growths, cant wait to see it bloom!

In terms of the mottled leaved ones that do especially well, I have a Paph. purpuratum that grows like a weed. Paph Hsinying Alien is a popular plant that grows well for me also.

Right you are with the genetics! I was assuming that with two alba parents the plant would have flowers that were all green and white. I knew what this particular plant would look like since it was in bloom when I bought it, so no surprises here. Looks like yours has similar coloring to mine, so maybe something else is playing a role here. (I love the curling petals on yours... mine are only half heartedly curled haha)
