New phal with dead roots/root rot?

Haha oh dear what have I gotten myself into! I'm sure once I get the hang of it I will acquire more. I'm curious to see other varieties and keep my little one company Does anyone have any suggestions for other easy blooms that a newbie would be ok with?

Thanks for the tip on south and east lighting. I'll most likely put it in the South a little way away from the window but if I do put it in the East adjusting my venetian blinds would allow for the right amount of lighting correct?
