I'd say the roots look fine. If you wanted to take a clean snipper to those very dead roots, you could with no problems. The growth at the base is a keiki. Looks like it might be struggling a little but with continued care, you may get a baby out of this

I agree with Sue.

Also, I'd recommend you to pay attention to your watering. Vandas shrivel their roots like that when they aren't getting enough water. If you're growing it outside bare-root, you should be watering it daily (or even twice a day, depending on how hot it is).

If you give it the care it needs, you'll notice small nubs poking out randomly around the roots or near the base of the plant. These are new roots. Vandas seem to stop growing when they go into bloom, and resume when they're done.
