Wicking depends on the properties of the fired clay, not the size of the clay object(s.) Water would wick the same distance up a container filled with LECA balls of any size, and a large block of the same LECA material, fired in the same way, sitting in water.

The kooky things I hear in "instructional" videos on YouTube suggest to me most of these people know next to nothing or are completely nuts.

Newbies need to stop obsessing and overthinking things. In order of importance, Phals need warmth, air to the roots, bright shade, and moisture to the roots. That is all they need.

The size of the LECA is relatively unimportant. Shape and contact area actually play a bigger role.

If you were to fill a room with basketballs, and fill the identical room with ping-pong balls, the open volume is the same.
