Ray,
No offense taken at all. I can't recall exactly where I read that orchids don't like a lot of dissolved solids, but I think it was from more than one source.
As far as the 1200ppm, I guess from entering in the numbers on the calculator on your site, it arrives at a much lower TDS number than 1200ppm. I know that calculation didn't include the Liquid Karma though - I think that stuff must add a lot of TDS. I'll have to check what it is before I add the LK.
I'm sure I am being overly concerned with a lot of things... I like to find out the root of all issues and I like to know as much as possible about everything I do. I'm a craftsman and perfectionist (have to be with woodworking), I think that boils over into the rest of my life and hobbies.
I use the General Hydroponics Standard Reference Solution to calibrate my meter. I don't see how there could be an easier way! I use similar reference solutions from GenHydro to calibrate the PH meter.

Ah HAH!!!! If you use the calculator on my website that allows you to plug in the N, P, & K, and the amount you add per gallon, the calculated TDS is only N, P, & K! There is a lot more stuff in most fertilizers than just those components.

On a side note, is it safe to add a little physan 20 to the nute solution and water them with it? Also is it OK to add it to a misting system that runs most of the day?

Just a comment on the Physan 20 (which I promote openly) I wouldn't put it in a misting system, no matter how frequently it ran. Physan can be caustic under certain conditions (for example newly developing flower spikes) so only use it as the label suggests. Actually, I prefer to stick with label instructions for any fungicide/insectide.
