Weelll, I took an Earthbox jr and turned it into a semi hydro community pot. So it has a gallon reservoir with a plastic level that gives only two places the hydroton is in the water. The Leca was still very good at wicking. It worked pretty well till the temps went over 90 and the phals didn't like it. I may try it again on a more heat tolerant genus.
Very kool, I find it hard to imagine they have room to swim in the reservoir with all the clay pebbles in the way. Unless I am assuming something that isn't true.

here you can see the black plastic grate that the Leca sits on, there are two divets still buried that the Leca dips into the reservoir to absorb the water
