One thing about putting the LECA in netting is that the if the LECA isn't held tight, the LECA might move around too much and inhibit rooting.

I say , try it, You don't know until you try. Post results, I'd like to see it.

I have a few phals that I've~ adopted in the office potted solely in LECA. It sits on a window, I've pretty much water it every morning when I come in. It seems to grow just fine, one of them is in spike now. See pic below

Depend on your growing condition, I live in SoCal, humidity is low. Anyways, like the above stated, you never know until you give it a try.
