Chinese cymbidiums in SH…questions

1. Are pseudobulbs potted too low?

2. Like other newly transplanted to SH, should I put them on a seedling heating mat? Or would that be too warm for them?

3. I'm thinking of putting them on my east-facing balcony this summer. Some areas get sun until about 9am, some get none. Planning to put these in the no sun area.

PS: I think I lucked out with the sinense…looks like several more than 3-4 growths to me (last two pics).

PPS: Bought these bottles of water simply for the long narrow, smooth length of the container. Seemed perfect for the cyms' long roots. Nothing like going to the corner store for your orchids.

I don't know... but please keep us updated! My concern with such a tall container is whether the water will wick far enough up to the plant.

The roots are long and straight and extend all the way down to just above the reservoir, so they should be getting enough even if the moisture didn't rise, but the condensation does seem to indicate that the LECA is doing its job and wicking up to near the top of the bottle.

It looks fine to me - although WOW! Does that look like a spill waiting to happen.

Many moons ago, I imported about 500 Chinese cymbidiums a month, and as they came in bare-root, I was happy to be able to just "dump rocks" around them in the pots, and be done. Never lost a one, or a flower, as most came in 2-3 old bulbs, and a new one with spike.

Yay! Was hoping you'd chime in.

But hey! When I was trying to figure out how to grow these, I looked on your website and it said you grew your Chinese cymbidiums in SH, so I thought, "Well, Ray says you can do it, so you better go find a container to hold them." (Also, I thought this might be a good media for them…airflow and moisture and all.)

...I'm a klutz too, so you've jinxed me now, for sure. The bottles are surprisingly steady on their own, but I did get a couple tall decorative pots to put them in.
