miltoniopsis orchid in S/H ? - Orchid Board

I have a big miltoniopsis that I will be dividing soon. I want to put one division in S/H. Do you think S/h would be good for a water loving Miltoniopsis? Has anyone tried it with one of these orchid and how did it go?

Mine is doing great in a peatmoss mix. I just can not seem to water it enough to keep new growth from getting wrinkles. I am hoping that S/H will keep my Miltonispsis wet. Or maybe with s/h I can water it everyday without fear of root rot .

i was just about to ask this question... i have a huge one that i'm waiting for it to stop blooming so i can do that too... the blooms have so far last about a month... but since i brought it inside, the growth has stunted... it had one more spike to grow and it stopped growing and browned out...

i'm hoping putting it in semi hydroponics i can have it wetter and happier indoors... it's my favorite orchid...

Thats one has amazing color. Is it new? Have you had any new growth from it? Mine grows like a weed it is getting BIT. I got it to bloom for me too. The only thing is the new growth is SO wrinkled. If I could keep the leaves from getting all Wrinkled it would be an amazing looking plant. I just hope The S/H will fix it.

I have ordered the Clay pellets So at least one of my plants is going S/H soon.

i believe this one is called "princess diana, red barron" and yes, i got it about a year and a half ago... with one pseudobulb... i think that's how you spell it... all of that is basically new growth but since i brought it in, i haven't been able to keep it as wet as it wants to be... soon, it will go back outside, and i'll make a video about it... since i'm documenting everything i do to my plants from now on...

it's so far, my favorite orchid...

Just remember: when you change the root zone environment, existing roots will fail and the plant will need new roots that are optimized for that new environment. How quickly the old ones fail is determined by the differences between the old and new environments. For that reason, the best time to make the switch to semi-hydroponics (usually a pretty significantly different environment), is just when new roots are emerging from the base of the plant.

For this reason I am scared to make the switch. It can or will kill the orchid if the switch is not done right? I have Encyclia Cordigera that's is just now sending out new roots and most of the old ones are dead. So maybe I will try that one. But I am still scared because I really like the plant.

Ray is, of course, correct. But in my experience of being both a novice orchid grower and a novice switcher to S/H, the Miltoniopsis I've switched seem to have had a pretty easy time adjusting. Maybe I just got lucky, though. Offered for what it's worth.

Well I held off switching my Milton to S/H yet I moves a few others over to test it out first. Maybe in the early summer I will take a split up my big one and see how a part of it does.

As of now I switched over my Encyclia Cordigera that has new roots and bad old roots. I also switched a division of my Sherry baby that has lots of new growth on it. I think both will do well. I moved a sad Catt and 2 sad looking Phals to S/H as well. I am excited to see how they do for me.
