Yeah I thought you could not tell what the photo link was. Sorry.
It could be a spike but only time will tell for sure. On mine the new growth tends to look very pointed this growth on yours looks more round. So it could be. once it gets a little longer you will know better what it is. How cool any new growth is good growth to me.

However, I do have a doubt, please. If I cover up the top part, wouldn't it stop all air exchange in and out of the pot?

Not at all. That's the reason the outside diameter is an inch smaller than inside diameter of the pot, and likewise, why the hole in the middle is larger than the plant.

Updates 2
Hello,
The new growth appears to be a new pseudobulb. Need second opinions though...
In anyway, I am happy that the plant has adjusted well in S/H and is growing a lot of new roots.

[QUOTE=estación seca;791270]In hot, dry climates like ours, the top medium of S/H pots does not stay moist very long. You can move it now, but be prepared to water often, or to spray with water often, until the roots grow down ino the S/H medium.[/QUOTE
I live in East Texas, and I am also having a difficult time keeping enough water in my orchids. Most of them are in the red-brown clay balls. Of course, I do keep the humidity up in the greenhouse. The temps are in the high 90's and low 100's. Bummer! BettyE

I have to water my S/H containers at least twice a week now or the reservoirs run dry.

So what's wrong with that? More water = faster growth

I was pointing out that watering S/H containers can't be by the calendar.

I use moss on the top of the LECA. It looks more "natural" than a plastic lid, retains moisture and allows for evaporation.
