Miltoniopsis and S/H method any experience? Female
Default Miltoniopsis and S/H method any experience?

I'm considering trying semi-hydroponics with a miltoniopsis orchid that I've been struggling with. The orchid was repotted almost a year ago from a heavy soil mix (what it was bought in) into fine bark/perlite/charcoal. I will admit, I'm a beginner, and still learning, so I struggled to keep it as hydrated as it would have liked. Especially when 10 new pseudobulbs popped up out of nowhere!! The orchid is growing, but not thriving, and I'm thinking I may need to come up with an alternative method. I'm wondering if anyone has tried S/H with miltoniopsis and whether they were successful or not? If not, what methods do you find have worked for you? Thanks in advance!

I did. It took to it better than any plant I switched over. I did SH in a clay pot. That resulted in lots of evaporation and, presumably, cool roots. It also resulted in most of the precipitate from evaporation being on the outside of the clay pot, away from the roots. Worked well for me in Boston.

I'll take that as good news! I didn't think about using the clay pot to keep the roots cooler; I may have to try that! I know miltoniopsis can be particular, so I was a bit nervous about trying it without more knowledge. Thanks for the tips!

Mine are all in clay pots and seem to like it.

Try rockwool.
I have read about this grower who had great success with it.
The thing is that you have to use chemicals to adjust the pH of rockwool every so often.
I don't remember the whole detail but you might want to search about using rockwool for s/h.
