S/H white mold growing on roots
Question S/H white mold growing on roots

Hi,

I just changed a week ago all my Phals to S/H; they all seem to be doing great but one... It's growing white mold (like really thin hair) on it's roots.

Another one got bacteria and I just gave her the peroxyde Hydrogen bath treatment... It also had white mold on it's roots and seems to had work; should I do the same? Please help!!

Thanks!!

there are some molds(fungi) that is beneficial to orchids; they have a symbiotic relationship in producing sugars for the plant....and there are fungi that infest the roots and leaves and manage to kill the plant....you just have to distinguish which is which....
mold and algae can be ugly and smell bad= I understand your concern....flushing the S/H monthly will help and hydrogen peroxide is not harmful since the extra oxygen just evaporates and you are left with plain water as a result.

So in general, if you have a mold or fungi problem. Hydrogen Peroxide isnt bad to flush with to see what happens if it takes care of the problem?

What other uses does hydrogen peroxide have for our plants?

I had mold issues with S/H, too. It was a disaster for my plant. If I were doing it again and had your problem, I would give it a round of Physan 20 and then begin flushing with peroxide at least twice a day for a week.

I've not gone back to S/H, but if I do I'm going to sit it in front of my new Dysan fan. It's air actually feels like a breeze, and you can adjust the setting to be super low, much lower than a typical fan. I would keep my plant near an open window but it never helped, a good fan may do the trick for my conditions.

I had mild to moderate issues with mold after almost all my switches to S/H this spring and summer. I had less trouble with plants I switched in warmer weather. I just flushed a lot early on and things sorted themselves out. There's no mold on anything now.

Hey everyone!

I just gave a Perox Hydro bath to this Phal as well... The bubbles from the reaction weren't similar as the ones in the bacteria bath (they reached the top of a high glass, yellowish, disgusting!); in this case they were tiny bubbles.

I'm letting them dry through the night (with the help of a fan, great tip!!); my question now is: tomorrow should i fertilize with FloraNova Grow AND Superthrive, or just plain water?

Thank you so much!

We seem to be missing a couple of obvious things here.

Any organic matter clinging to the roots will rot when kept constantly moist. Whether it is a problem or
not to the plant depends to some extent on the degree.

When you move a plant into S/H culture, the old roots, having grown in a different environment, will not do well, and will die, then rot. That's why it is important to repot just when brand new roots are emerging from the plant.

I grow my potted Phals in air cone pots and can sometimes see the white mold in the pot. I have never had a problem with the mold.

If they grow and the roots stay good, I ignore the white spots. Not every mold is harmful to orchids.

True enough, Brooke!

Healthy (root) tissue is usually unaffected by molds and fungi. It is usually already-compromised tissues that succumb.
