KELPAK - Orchid Board

Hello,

I recently wanted a fertilizer supplement for my Orchids (Phals, Oncidium, Pleiones, Calanthe and Cymbidiums)

I did some research, and fortunately for me, my agricultural engineer friend sent me a bottle of KELPAK.

I will be using it weekly with along side my fertilizing regimen at a concentration of 1:500 (2 ml Kelpak with every liter of water)

I will also store the bottle in the fridge between uses.

I will keep everyone posted on the results.

I have been using it for several months now, and the results are astounding. Check out the "Question about stinky seaweed" thread.

The manufacturer states that it should be stable at room temperature for at least 2 years.

I have already checked it Ray, i will be using it as you recommended it at 1:500 ratio.

Good idea to refrigerate it. At room temperature it might harbor bacterias that can be harmful to your orchids.

I can't find Kelpak here, so I bought a different seaweed extract. Since I read that different species of seaweed have different amounts of the hormones and other, I hope that what I got is equally good as kelpak.

Camille, the key is finding one high in auxins, rather than cytokinins.

I haven't used Kelpak but I'm a fan of seaweed suppliments. I've been using another seaweed product for a few years now and I've had excellent results. Keep us posted on your experience with it.

Thanks, I looked up the seaweeds. Kelpak is made from Ecklonia maxima, but all I can find is Ascophyllum nodosum.
I just looked up some scientific literature, and experiments show that Kelpak is significantly better than A.nodosum based products at stimulating root growth.... And apparently the extraction process has a lot to do with it.

I guess I'll use what I have (it's a very small sample) and try to hunt down Kelpak or something with the same seaweed.
