I don't see how it's possible to use the same pot for s/h. What about all the holes at the bottom of the pot? If the same pot is used, it's just an orchid growing in pellets, not true s/h.
Eric, for s/h you need a pot that has no holes in it, except for 1-2 holes about an inch or two up the side to make the reservoir. Either get a starter kit from Ray, or make your own pot using a deli container or something similar.

Hi Camille,
You really threw me with this, I didn't know the pot shouldn't have holes in the bottom. My S/H mentor mentioned nothing about it. I drill holes about 1" up on the side so I know when to add water to the reservoir. Guess I've been doing it wrong. Hmmmm, better not tell the 'chids, they are doing fine........

Learning all the time, fortunately my plants haven't been in the 'wrong' pots for long and I can easily transfer them to the 'right' pot if need be.

Sorry to mis-lead you Eric, it was strictly un-intentional and pure ingnorace on my part.

Al

Well, at least you will know this little bit of information that seems to be lacking in all the reading I've done! I now have about 60 plants to re-pot!

You mean that you just have them in standard orchid pots with the clay pellets? Sue does that for all her orchids. If it's working for you, why not just leave them the way them are? It would save you a lot of trouble!!

Quite frankly, right now, I'm considering throwing in the towel on the whole orchid thing!
Al
(sorry, just a bit discouraged)

OrchidNewB,
I want to apologize for hi-jacking your thread. We sometimes get off on tangents.
As you can see, many of us are in the learning curve.

We appreciate your updates and look forward to more.

Oh Al! You can't quit growing orchids. The ones you have posted in the past have been so beautiful. What's going on? Maybe we can help?

Hi Terri, thanks for your concern. Let me explain a bit. Because of physical disabilities it is very difficult for me to repot plants. After doing about 60 repots to discover I had done it incorrectly was a bit over whelming. I've come around now and will leave them the way they are. They seem happy, putting out new roots and leaves. It was just that I had put all that work into them and did it wrong..............UGH!
As for pictures, thanks for the compliment but you won't find me posting pics of phals anymore since I received two e-mails stating that no one was interested in my lousy pictures of "grocery store phals" and to stop wasting their time with the postings.............so be it!

I can't believe that people would be so rude as to send you that type of email! There is nothing wrong with grocery store phals. I have some, and many people have some. Grocery-store noid, or award winning clone, they are need the same care, and you can be proud of your successes with them. Don't let a few rude people get to you, I always like to see what people are growing, and I am sure that there are others who appreciate grocery store phals too!

I looked at your gallery, I think you have some great shots!
