Try using an HB pencil it seems to last longer than and a lot cheaper than most pens.
Unless you have access to a label printer I have one comparable with Orchid Wiz and it prints UV protected...

I give no water to my Dens during the middle 2mths of winter down here in NZ. This helps them to spike in the spring according to the current reading available.
