Vanilla cutting's care. Help?
Question Vanilla cutting's care. Help?

Hello!
I received a short Vanilla orchid cutting last week. It had developed 5 small roots when I got it. I planted it into a small pot. The substrate mostly consists of orchid mix (gravel, coal and bark). I also added some low -fertilized cacti mold (peat, sand, etc.).

So far, I have thoroughly watered it once and misted every morning. The cutting gets light from 13W LED lamp, when necessary. I have been trying to provide light for it min. 8 hours per day. The room is about 72-80 F at temperature.

Is there anything else I could do for the little orchid to help it grow? I really want to success with this one and I can invest some money on it's care, too. Can I have a little help here, please? I don't even know if I've treated the orchid in the right way so far.

Is the plant getting some natural light in addition to the LED? If not, 12 hours would be more appropriate than 8 hours. A single lamp might be able to provide enough light for a small cutting, but it won't be enough when the plant gets larger.

Other than that what you are doing seems perfectly appropriate for establishing a small cutting. Once it is established vanilla is pretty tough and adaptable.

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful tips! It's a relief to know that I've managed to do some things right.

I have placed the orchid near window, while protected from direct sun. It usually gets plenty of natural light. The last few days it's been rainy and cloudy though, so I've given it extra light via LED.

I'll try my best and give it about 12 hours of light, then. I own another lamp in addition to the LED; 15W megaman plant lamp. It's more of a spotlight though, so I probably need the second LED in the future.

Vanillas are terrestrial and they grow well in a mixture designed for African Violets. Keep the medium moist, but not soggy and mist the vine with water a couple of times a day. Once a cutting is established it will grow rapidly and it will produce aerial roots along the stem. You'll need a trellis to wrap the growth on. I don't know about your lighting. Mine is grown outdoors in bright dappled sunlight. Keep in mind that our climates are vastly different.
