I use treefern and I have a cheap source.As far as salts etc accumulating if you use ro water and a mild fert you wont have this issue at all.I am well aware of the whole tree fern trouble where i get mine it is said they are farmed wether this is true or not I dont know.
All my orchids grow in it and I mean fast they take hold within days.
