exactly a catt usualy makes a couple of small eyes that stay dormant and will start up after the main eye gets damaged....otherwise they would be just way to easy for any damage kill in the wild for sure....one bug or a falling limb and poof.
They have backups you cant see very easyly.

LOL it is nothing at all we all get the same help here wheater we have just started growing or we have grow for years and just got a new plant of a type we have never grown ourselves.....
I have only had catts now since last August and lol just got my first slc this spring .....the slc does not grow the same as a blc so I went to s/h way too soon with her....she is still growing but still no new roots and signs of dehydration are beginning.thinking new roots should be emerging soon but lol we all lose a few and next time I will know ....and I will buy another just like her if this one fails.
I just started a new catt from a old section of three small backbulbs myself that were part of cleaning up a catt and repotting it had two very small and flat against the rhizome eyes. Not even bumps really and both went active after a month or so amd while still very small and still not much more than a normal dormant eye on one of my bigger catts have now got 2 or 3 new roots each.....even the parts you think are hopeless can spring to life just never give up untill they are truly dead.

It must be only 6 months or less since I was the one receiving the advice I've now passed on... we all need help and try and give help where we have managed to learn from others. That's what makes this board so great

Hey QLD, has your Coelogyne cristata flowered? I've had mine 3 years but no flowers. It's healthy and has 8 new growths on it.

The easiest eyes to spot are a tiny roundish place where it looks like a new growth is about to start.
The first ones I spotted I thought were the very very start of a green new growth... but then they sat there for months doing nothing... then started up a lot later. Some I've seen looked like the dried up start of a new growth, but have jumped into life months later. I'll try and take some pics when I'm home later, because I'm sure I've got some visible ones on some of my orchids.

new eyes can be stubborn mine will start a bunch all at once and most will grow like mad but a few just swell up a sit ther looking like theyt shold pop into growth any day but may sit a month or more before they do ....will make it interesting when it gets to bloom size finaly maybe hafl will bloom in spring and the others in fall.....that would explane it somewaht since this one is supposed to bloom more than once a year.

Marion, I only received mine 3 months ago, I received this from Melbourne (on "Oztion") like Ebay. This orchid was just 7 bulbs, with some green shoots coming from about 4. The guy I bought it off, had separated his plant in October, last year. I somehow doubt this will flower for a couple of years. These bulbs are in a 16cm pot. Yesterday, I saw a new shoot coming from one of the bulbs. I don't know how they will survive in our climates. As they thrive in the cool Himalayas. How big is your plant. Can you take a photo.
