I too have read and heard at our orchid society meetings (in Saskatoon) that you can notch the rhizome and leave everything as is. I agree there would have to be viable eyes on the back portion of the rhizome. There is another post on this site about using coconut water/milk to stimulate these growths. I have a Bc. Maikai 'Louise' that I am ashamed to say I nearly killed with root rot. There was barely any root and 2 shrivelled leaves, but I was determined to make it live. So this spring I regularly watered it with a mixture of coconut milk diluted with water. I made sure it covered the entire rhizome area. The plant has no mature leaves left and about 6 shrivelled but green leafless pseudobulbs. But there are 7 tiny new sets of leaves distributed over the base of the plant(rhizome). They are still tiny (1/4 inch to 3/4 inc each) but are bright green and alive. I no longer use coconut milk as I don't need more new growths. I am trying to baby it along and re-establish the plant. Yes, I could have just bought another one, but that wasn't the point somehow!

So if you decide to notch or cut thru the rhizome, you could try misting or watering the back half with coconut water to wake up those dormant eyes. I would also use sulphur or cinnamon or something on the cut. Also doing it in spring or when there is active growth would be best.

AHH!! Silken, you are the first person I have seen that is from Saskatoon! I am SO happy! And about that coconut milk, I should definitely try it! And I am thinking about joining the orchid society, but once I get some more money, and is there an age limit? I am 15!
